Evening geeks

After a time out from salongeek for a while im back with tons of questions :)

So, my 10year plan (i know its a biggie)
Im currently working part time in a salon and at home.
My plan......own salon....with a training academy either built in or seperate premises.
Ive given myself 10years to accomplish this.....if its dine earlier then perfect.
At the moment im currently training in all the little extras i want to do and refresher courses were i can get them.
My question is....what is the best route for me to go down to eventually train and have my own training school?
I have seen the guild do a teaching course, is it enough to have my own school?!?
Any input or ideas would be great.
Thanks geeks

Hi,
Firstly you need minimum of NVQ Level 3 diploma in beauty, you can then enrol onto the PTLLS which is the minimum you need to teach ...
There are lots of threads on this topic should you want more information ...
Good luck on your goal .... More than achievable ... Everyone should have a five year plan ...

Hi sandra.
Thanks so much for your reply.
I will look into it.
Looks like i will have to go back to college ;-( im level 2 and my massage lashes etc qualifications are from private trainers ;-(
I thought 10years would be enough not to stress, if i do it in 5 then perfect
Xx

You don't need a level 3 in beauty, you need to be qualified in the courses you want to teach, and you need an AET which used to be PTLLS x

Really??
Thats amazing if thats the case. I have a few more courses i want to do then i was hoping to do the course that the guild are offering to be able to teach
Xx

When I completed mine yrs ago - you had to have an A Level equivient in your chosen field. (See link above)
Sqigernetball - If that's changed I would be shocked, but I could imagine some institutes letting people do this.

But you really would be short changing yourself - with a level 3 you could train for other companies, Acadmies & Colleges (without they wouldn't even read the rest of your CV) regardless of years in the industry. (Who knows what you Might want to do in the future - when you add to these goals)
As a qualified teacher whose just finished my under graduated Degree (PCE) last year. My advise - complete your L3 - as a teacher you need to constantly think about your own continuous professional development,
.... and as a student who is booking on courses for my own CPD - without the trainer having a L3 and teaching quals I wouldn't book on your courses. (Only my opinion - sorry just telling you my truth)
Call these companies and see what quals you need. If it's just a level 2 and you only ever want to work for yourself - brilliant good news for you....
Good luck in your goal.

Call Dave at the Guild and ask him, he will set you straight ....

Hello! Inbox me x

I think it all depends how and where you want to teach. Babtac gave confirmed they would accredit a course if we are qualified in the subject and have an AET. If you want to teach an nvq or similar, it may be different x

My goal is to have my own training academy either within my salon or a seperate premises....i would have to have am established salon before i contemplated this.
Honestly, teaching in colleges doesnt appeal to me at the moment. My preference might changes as the years go by.
Love all your input geeks.
Thanks so much for taking your time

I am doing exactly the same at the moment, I qualified in hair and beauty 14 years ago but for the last 6 years was out of the industry due to, I might as well say it 'Mental Health' issues. For the last 3 years, don't laugh, I've been running a candlemaking business which helped with my health issues. I have now retrained and I'm back in the beauty business! My aim years ago was to teach within the industry but sadly due to various reasons it didn't work out that way. I am now back on track and currently studying, from home, the AET Award in Education and Training (which replaces PTLLS) the level of qualification you need is the same as you want to teach, i.e if you want to teach level 3 or NVQ then you need the same qualifications. You also only need 6 months experience in each qualification (used to be 1 year). There are a lot more places offering the AET course now than years ago, it used to be only colleges but places that I have looked at recently are The Guild, UK Beauty Schools and The Teaching and Training Company. All of these offer it online. I have chosen The Teaching and Training Company (she is on Facebook) as she offers payment options, you study at home, complete assignments and then I will need to do a micro-teach session at her Beauty School in Dover. Once you have done that and are qualified you will then need to design your own courses and get them accredited or The Guild of Beauty Therapists have an options where you can be an approved training centre offering their courses (I haven't asked them about this yet but I think this may be the way I will go so that I have got some support). In preparation for all this I have recently joined The Guild. I don't think you need to give yourself 10 years, it's a lot easier than you think. I have a workshop which we built in my garden and I've asked if this is good enough to run classes from and have been told it is. I gave myself 3 years (as I am now 47) but I think I might actually be able to get started next year! Hope this info helps, good luck with your venture, my best advice is GO FOR IT! xx

Hi there

Just joined salongeeks & come across your post? How have you got on with all of it? Sounds fab.

Im currently designing a business plan not sure whether to have a training academy/salon with a few days offering advanced beauty treatments, as I have 15 yrs experience Or just do training days in beauty wholesalers training rooms to start with as training is what I really want to do. Have you been accredited by anybody also?

Thanks
