I have a pedicure client that came to me with L&P on her toes from another salon. She wants to let it grow off. I tried to get her to soak it off but she says NO WAY. She doesn't want acetone soaking in to her system. But that is the least of my worries at this point. There is something very strange going on with those toes of hers. Tonight when she came in I was taking down the length of her nails because they were way too long. I noticed that under the L&P that it almost looks like her natural nails are deteriorating. I don't know how else to describe it. I used an orangewood stick at first because it looked like she had some gunk under her nail. Well I can put that stick in there pretty far and STUFF just keeps coming. It's kind of mushy I guess. Could this be Onychatrophia? I'm not sure what the heck this is and was hoping some of you could help.

Thank you!!!!

It sounds pretty nasty and I would make sure all your implements are thoroughly sanitized and sterilized, towels used - washed at 60 and any files thrown away ... plus a recommendation that she see a podiatrist as soon as.

But I thought a Podiatrist won't look at feet even if they so much as have Nail enamel on.

Sorry ... meant chiropodist didn't I?? We call chiropodists podiatrists in the States.

Well love it sounds pretty horrid to me, and the least of her worries should be a 20 minute soak in acetone/product remover...... Acetone is one of the safest product removers around and over exposure to this is pretty unlikey from one soak off session.....but you can use cotton wool, soak this in acetone, place it on the enhanced toe and wrap up in a little foil, this will work fab and she wont feel like she is sitting in a pond of acetone......

What is going on under her L&P overlayed toe nails, can become more serious....
Refer her to a podiastrist or Chiropadist, they will take a swab of what is growing under her nail and will send it of to the lab for culturing..... Only then will she really know what is causing this.....As it is on her feet my money is on a nice ripe fungal infection......feet provide the perfect breeding ground for this, sweat, enclosed in shoes....
This is something we do not treat , but let those that can do their stuff.....

Chiropodist vs podiastrist....they are the same lol ......

Podiatrists, previously known as chiropodists, are specialists who assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of problems of the foot and lower limb below the knee. These can include minor ailments, diseases and deformities of the feet and lower limbs, for example, bunion operations or metatarsal realignment. Podiatrists also advise patients on how to prevent foot problems in the future.

The term 'chiropody' is still used by some professionals to describe the more routine aspects of podiatry such as nail cutting, the treatment of more minor ailments and minor surgery. Non-state-registered podiatrists are required to describe themselves as chiropodists.
Podiatry is a relatively new term for the treatment of foot disorders. Pod is Greek for foot and iatros, doctor - hence the name Podiatrist or foot doctor!

sounds delightful!!! cut her feet off!!! lol!! sorry only joking! i did a set of acrylics on my mum's toes in the summer and some of them did the same thing i soaked them off cut them right back and made her put some antifungal stuff on them just in case that's what it was, i think it was just that they had lifted off the nails slightly with her shoes knocking them and they'd got all sweaty and soggy underneath, they grew back ok after a while. the enhancements really need coming off so you can get a real look at what's going on under there. have you tried telling your client that a one off soaking them off would be a lot better than getting a really nasty fungal infection that might end up with her losing the nails all together?

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I don't know what I would do without my fellow Geeks!!! I will definately be calling my client first thing this morning to tell her to see a doctor!! Will let you know how things turn out.

Thanks again!!

my first ever set of feet were horrid. old lady with what i can only describe as dog claws and she wanted me to clip them. when i tried the nail lifted off the nail bed (uuurrgghh) i was honestly near sick. thought i was gonna gag there and then. told her i was not a qualified chiropodist and that's what she needed.

I couldn't wait to get away from her and it was a charity thing so i just hurried through it as fast as i could (not my area of work so didn't care if i missed stages out) and then she says, "aren't you going to do my cuticles" !!!

The thought of it, i was really struggling at this point to keep my dinner down and just said "they're fine as they are luv"

i'm still having nightmares about dog claws.

I had a lady come to me a while ago for a soak off and then a new set. I sat her down and had a good look at the nails and straight away i didnt like the look of them.. they looked a strange colour under every one of them.. anyway i started to soak them off and as the acrylic was slowly coming away i noticed that her nails were coming off too.
It turned out that she had been going to an NSS salon for 2 years and they had carried on filling them, knowing exactly what was going on under all the acrylic..
I told her that this should not happen, but she seemed a bit depressed and just wanted long nails on. She also said that it was her decision too.
I told her that i would not be putting a new set of nails on her as nearly every one had peeled away almost back to the cuticle, and that she needed to see a doctor straight away. She was very dissappointed but what could i do. I wasnt going to jepordise my reputation.
I have heard that she did go to the docs and her nails are on the mend. she also wants me to see her again but i dont think it will be for a few more months yet....
