Hi there

Imagine going down the lateral nail fold to the corner by the free edge (hope this makes sense). If the skin there is dead and hard, obviously been nibbled at and unsightly, how many of you would use the nippers to get rid of this skin? Would you do this every time on a fortnightly manicure?

I've always been reluctant to use the nippers (except when necessary). When I was taught how to do manicures I was told not to use nippers on the eponychium (unless absolutely necessary) as this would cause it to thicken over time (and I've seen clients who have had this done regularly - yuk), and I wondered if this would have the same effect on the bit I'm trying to describe above.

No amount of oil will sort this problem out as it's too thick.

it needs to be softened and exfoilated, why not try cutcile eraser and cuticle oil every day and a good quality hand lotion as well. i wuld tend to use a little sea serum to rmove this hard skin if this didnt work then use the eraser and oil to keep it conditioned.

Hi there

Before I'd nip it off.[Only dead skin]
During the manicure procedure you will be doing cuticle maintainence.
A cuticle eraser for the clients home use & a good cuticle oil will help.
The best cuticle Remover I've tried is Creative's Cuticle Remover[not for retail---works excellent].
Failing that if you dont nip it- the client probably will- doing more damage.

Hi there

I'm afraid she's one of those clients who wouldn't take the time or effort to do anything at home, not really the sort. She's had a solar oil from me ages ago and just forgets to use it.

I don't think exfoliating will do it as it's too thick, almost calloused if you like. I'd be there forever! lol Don't think cuticle eraser would either.

As you say I suppose it would be better for me to nip it off and then encourage her to use her oil or hand cream ( or try at least!).

Thanks

TRy sea serum its for removing calluses on the feet and is excellent sounds like a little will d a good job on this. available from creative nail design as part of their spa range

Rejuvinater from the CND 411 Range.. helps the natural process of repair-damaged skin nails etc, although if they dont use Solar Oil[basic] cant see them applying anything else

Try the Sea Serum.Depending on how many pedicures you do as opposed to manicure & prep for enhancements would be what I'd base the purchase on.

If the client chooses not to follow up with your advice for homecare..Nothing is really going to be an instant miracle result & will soon degress after they are back to their normal routine.
At least try to recommend a good hand lotion anything is better than nothing.
Specialized treatments added to the service are a specialist treatment, with professional products to be used by professionals only.If you have to use more intense products to service her charge a little extra for them..

maybe this is really wrong but i slightly buff hard skin with a file to smooth it, then apply loadsa lotion and oil.

i wouldnt use the nippers for that i only use the nippers for hang nails

Deb if she's not prepared to do her homework then there's no helping her I'm afraid. She needs to want to get rid of it as much as you do and put the work in herself between visits.

If you cut off this skin the body goes into protection mode and the skin grows back quicker and thicker to protect itself.
If your client is serious about getting rid of the hard skin she MUST maintain your hard work between visits.
EDUCATE her and explain why she should take some responsibility for her problem, explain what the products do and how they do it. Yes you are the professional and can make a difference to her hands and nails BUT she can't take you home with her! Homecare is a must if she is serious about this.
Good luck!

Hi there

Thanks for all your thoughts. The problem bugs me really, as I do her a manicure every 2 weeks and really feel it's not the dogs bollocks with that horrible hard skin there.

The bit about the skin coming back harder is why I haven't used the nippers really. However, I think I shall have to nip them first to get rid of the excess and then keep on at her to do her home care.

Cheers
