This is really random and really is baffling me. So I hope somebody can please help me ...

Both my big toes and both my 2nd toes in from my big toe have fallen off. Firstly the small ones one after the other and then both my big toes one after the other. There was no infection, it wasn't painful, the nails weren't discoloured I hadn't dropped anything on my nails. Basically the nail just above my cuticle started to raise and a fresh nail grew underneath. Then it eventually got so far up it just fell off. And my toes grew back no problems at all. Now on my left foot it is happening again with my 3rd toe from my big one :S

I really can't understand. The doctors don't have a clue. Because its not like I have had a fungal infection and its caused me to loose my toe ail. No pain nothing. Just decided to start growing another toenail under it pushes it up and falls off.

Please can somebody maybe know what or why this is?

Are you a runner ??

Sometimes runners have issues with toes.

I'm going to PM you as I have a similar story and don't want to bore everyone.

I think that decision is just silly and that allot of us would benefit from your experience. I cant stand it when people wont share so we can all learn. I'll pm you does not help anyone.

Same thing happened my friend two years in a row with the big toes. Doctor had no answer at all.

Well, then I apologize. I knew it was going to be a back and forth chat about it so I didn't think it would be appropriate on an open forum.

So here it is then.

My experience started when I was a teenager when I played a lot of hockey and when I snowboarded a lot. I happened to notice one day that my toenails were bruised but I couldn't really recall a time that I had hurt them. My initial thoughts at that point where that it was probably repeated nudging against the stiff hard plastic that was inside my hockey skates so I didn't think much of it. Eventually I lost both my big toe nails. There was no pain and there was no infection underneath. Simply fresh new nails. I went on with life, nails grew back..no big deal.

However, I am now going to be 27 this year and lose my big toe nails every year and half or so and this has continued since I was 16. When I was about 21 I think, I went to my doctor and she sent me to a specialist who ran the tests for fungal infection, etc..but there was no appearance of an infection nor was there any positive results from the tests. The doctor basically told me that my brain has memorized my body's response to the initial trauma and so any sort of nudging (even if it is minor) will cause my nails to separate. My doctor basically told me that I was a bit like a lizard that loses its tail in response to danger. Lol.

I can only believe that the doctor was right because as I have said I have no infections and have been tested a few times. Now when the nails fall off there is absolutely no bruising, no discolouration as the OP has said also, no pus, no blood. Just a fresh nail. The last time it happened was just over a year ago and i'm hoping that it doesn't happen again.... But that's wishful thinking.

I typically wear very lose 'ugg' type boots or I wear sandals where there isn't any pressure on my big toenails.

That's quite interesting really glad you shared just in case anybody else comes up with the same issue

My sisters toe nail came off last year. She finished a 52 mile charity walk, toe went numb then black then fell off. It will be interesting to see if hers keeps falling off. Don't think it's totally grew back yet. Keeps asking me to put false toenails on her when she's wearing an open toe lol:)xx

Interestingly..my big toes are always numb.. I forgot to mention that part.. They're not fully numb but I have a strange tingly sensation (almost the feeling after being frozen for a dental procedure..) but only when I touch them. Again, it's all been checked out. Nothing's wrong.. But it's certainly strange.

Mine do it all the time ;) especially if I run loads but also when I'm run down

shoes being too tight could also be a culprit .

at least there not sore xxx

I have a client that plays netball and she has hard fronted trainers because of this she often looses the 3rd toe nail on each foot, first time I was concerned and then she said dont worry we call it netball nail, all the team looses toe nails, not due to any fungus/bacteria it's just a problem we get.

So coud be from shoes she wears causing it.

Yeah, and that's pretty well why mine started to fall off in the first place..Because of my hockey skates. I'm sure of it.

And they say exercise is good for you!! Meh!!

I lost a toe nail last year and two of my toes are looking like they are coming away so I'm preparing for it to happen again ... All through running! Never had it when I just went to good old excersice class!
