For years, economists referred to the Lipstick Effect as a way of gauging the state of the economy. It was considered an affordable luxury that women could buy, even in tough times, as a quick and easy pick-me-up. Now though, for the first time ever, nail polish has outstripped sales of lipstick meaning that, quite simply, our industry just became pretty damn important.

The study, authored by Mintel, revealed that £244 million-worth of lipsticks were sold last year, compared to over £284 million-worth of nail polish. So, when women have a small amount of cash to squander, they are choosing polish over lipstick.

Mintel also revealed that UK women were now spending £450 on average a year on their nails with over 70 per cent of British women confirming they bought at least one nail polish in 2014, compared to only 59 per cent in 2013.

This is great news for the industry...

Until then...geek on!
