Can anyone explain this to me as I have seen a deep tissue massage on a few treatment menu's in place of a swedish and just wondered if there was a difference at all?

Thanks

hiya,
yes their is a difference between the two.

Swedish massage is massaging muscle groups in a set sequence using a mix of effleurage, petrissage, pressure points and tapotement.

Deep tissue is using specific pressure on specific points pressing deeply into the tissue, quite often using the elbow or knuckle to apply the pressure. also working on trigger points, pressing down firmly on an area of pressure and waiting for it to release.

Some people compare deep tissue to sports massage as its working on certain areas with a deep pressure.

for relaxation purposes, I would encourage a client to choose swedish, for specific tension release I would suggest deep tissue, but to be honest I mix and match.

what I would be wary of is booking a deep tissue, as it would be very intensive. I suggest a swedish with some deep tissue thrown in.

I think some people mistakenly assume deep tissue is swedish.
