I have just started my nvq course, had my manicure and pedicure parts of the course, left with a set of questions to answer from my beauty book and a few handouts and told to get practising - I'm not feeling too confident!! I had 1-2-1 with the course tutor and feel left on the landing....so to speak....I have had a few practices but I can see I would probably need lots more practice, but how do I know I'm doing a good job. I am booked in for my first assessment in 10 days and have asked for it to be the pale coloured assessment, as it is obviously the easiest thing to do first, but is this a cop out - should I have gone for the red/french manicure part first?? Also, no one has showed me how to french manicure, should I ask my nvq tutor to demonstrate??? Help!:cry:

your tutor should have shown you a french, otherwise how will you know how to do it in exam, (ie you cant tidy up the smile etc..)
i would be telling her you want her to show you , hth x

Of course you should ask your tutor to be demonstrating.....shouldn't she be doing this anyway. If she is not then what on earth are you paying for. If your still not sure about anything ask, ask and ask again. This is your chosen career and if you want to get the best out of it then its down to your tutor to give you the training that you have paid for and not leaving you hoping you can blag it on a wing and a prayer. With regards to your assessment......I know that you have to do a mani with pale, coloured and french for your course work so firstly stop panicking and choose what colour you are going to use and stick with that.....no faffing and changing your mind.....lol. Make sure your table is set up correctly with all your products you are going to use, hand sanitizer and tools in barbercide, do your consultation card with your client and then proceed with you service. When it comes to polish.....apply your base coat to all ten nails, apply your first coat to all ten nails and then second coat to all ten nails. If you flood the cuticle with polish then dip a paint brush into your varnish remover and wipe round the nail leaving a tiny margin around the nail. This will give you the perfect polish. Apply your top coat and then give your aftercare advice and your done and dusted. You can put that part of your course to one side and focus on the next. If you have any questions, please feel free to pm me.

Just what I needed to hear - thank u so much - I guessed I was not getting much support and it has been putting me off completely. I had almost lost interest but this site has given me great enthusiasm again - cheers

Thanks for your brilliant advice - I shall email her now! Cheers

I probably shouldn't ask this question but does anyone know how much is a reasonable price to pay for an NVQ course for mani & pedicures? Also, how many demonstrations can I expect to get from my tutor and how long after the course am I expected to take my first assessment?? Also, I am going to start as a mobile technician, what's the best way to transport all the equipment (case, carry bag?).Cheers:)

Hello, i have recently got my stuff for mobile nail tech , i bought a nail case online for my liquid and powder tips , nail enamel etc. I also got those stackable boxes you can get in the super market cheap they are lilac look quite nice, one has all my pedicure in, one has manicure and the other has my towels.I have a bag (i got from hyperion group) that has my general products like tools cuticle remover, nail oil files etc, i always need this bag whether doing enhancements, pedicure or manicure. So to cut along story short i just select the box i need or my nail case and always take in my bag, then i am not having to carry every thing in or realise that i havent got something when i need it. You do need a lot! Look online for nail cases prices vary a lot, mine was about £40.00 its really good, pink aswell!

Also have a look in your local diy store (b&q etc) some of their tool boxes are really good, esp the ones with wheels as you'd be surprised how heavy all your kit can be!!!
and they are usually cheaper.
HTH
