New to nail art, help!

Hi guys!

I usually just play it safe and use block colours or glitters but have decided to give nail art a little bash and am actually really enjoying it! Just a little question that might sound silly but here goes! When applying diamontees, do you apply them to gel and cure before your layer of top coat?

I normally put them on when i have applied the top coat, as i find the gems go a bit dull.
But i am sure i have read on here that others put them on the last colour coat then apply top coat.

I can only tell you how I apply mine, but I use the S5 size Swarovski crystals mixed with S6, but I apply it within my shellac colour before I cure it, then I put shellac top coat over the top. Xxxx
