Hi, it's been a while since I've done a pedicure when I trained we were taught to soak first then file the feet but I've noticed it's now the other way round. Can someone help by going through their routine & also my massage routine has totally gone. I will be ordering my microplane & belava bowl this week

Hi kellybun, I do the following:
1.soak feet. Everything is easier to work on with warm softened feet.
2. Cuticle work and nails clipped/filed.
3. Hard skin removal
4. Deep foot scrub
5. Massage with lotion
6. Cleanse nails with scrub fresh and apply polish or shellac.

For a luxury pedi I would apply a foot mask and heated booties after step 4.
I love pedis, one of my faves x

Thanks Shardena, would you use the foot mask & heated booties before you do the massage bit also what massage routine do you follow

If you are using a Microplane then it is reccomended to use it on dry feet.

I sanitise the feet and then use the Microplane on the feet before doing anything else! X

Yes I massage after the foot mask and heated booties with a little bit of lotion as the feet are already lubricated with the residue of the mask. I tend to just start at the ankles and work my way down with slow, soothing and sometimes deep movements depending on the part I am doing.
Jodieeeanne what do you think of the microplane? I wouldn't mind trying it. Also id love to try the callus peel (sold by aston fincher) has anyone tried that?

If doing shellac instead of polish you need to do that before the pedicure soak etc.. If polish then that's last :)

Love my Microplane. I had a lady for a pedi and she was really conscious of her feet. She usually went to a salon where they used a blade.

I explained what I had and she gave me a chance. So far so good as she's rebooked and was really impressed !

You don't have to really scrub. The file does it all for you so it's not hard work for you as a therapist. I think it's a great tool and gives a good opportunity to retail the at home products for them to maintain their feet - making your job easier next time !!

Hope that helps. For the price you really may as well give it a go. Only feedback I've had is it can be quite ticklish but I think most files would be if you were that way inclined! X

Don't know if I'm missing the obvious here (!) but why is shellac before anything else? Sorry if it's a silly question lol xx

Nails absorb lots of water making them swell. This could then affect the application & length of wear for the Shellac. Its recommended to do this prior to soaking. So you would sanitise, file & shape, cuticle work, scrub fresh then Shellac application. Then microplane and continue to do your soak, scrub & massage as normal. Hope this helps x

If you would like a step by step massage routine I would be happy to post it here for you or pm you? The one I use is more for a luxury pedi after masks and booties? I love massage,.its my favourite part of any treatment. :)

I have two questions....

When you say "sanitize" the feet, are you referring to a non-aerosol spray? Or is there something else that you use?

I'd like to retail something for people who have calluses so that they can help maintain at home. What retail products do any of you recommend? Please be specific. I feel I do a great job of working on calluses. Many of my new clients tell me that they've never had their feet so smooth, and they do ask what they can do to maintain it. At the moment, I have nothing to offer them in my salon (I'm new to this salon, so this is the first time that I get to choose what retail I offer). I really like this one product, but since it is offered at Sally's (here in the United States) and people can get it without a license, I'd rather offer something that is a professional-level product that they can't get at a store.

Thanks!

Kellybum, my routine is;

1. Effleurage leg from ankle to knee, 6 times
2. Friction movements from ankle to knee, splitting the leg into 3 sections, 3 times each
3. Friction around ankle, 3 times
4. Friction from ankle to toes between bones and slid back up, 3 times
5. Petrissage wringing from heel to toes on sole, 3 times
6. Cup heel between hands use alternate rolling
7. Kneed back of heel, Achilles tendon between thumb & forefinger
8. Effleurage back of leg from ankle to base of knee, 6 times.
9. Friction from ankle to base of knee, splitting area as best as possible, 3 times
10. Tapotement tapping to from of toes, 6 times
11. Effleurage to whole leg.
12. Finish with a hold, squeeze and a little shake!
Repeat on 2nd leg.

Hope that helps, funny how you have to do the routine on an invisible person to put into words what you do automatically! I put how many times and it looks precise but it's really not, go with what feels right.

Karaxxx

I use a spray sanitiser on the feet before beginning to use the Microplane. You can get mundo sprays for hands/feet from S2

You can also get the Microplane from S2 and get retail versions (they're smaller paddle versions)

I use the colossal Microplane and retail the smaller paddle x

Thanks everyone for your help & kara after reading your routine it's coming back pretty sure that sounds like the one I was taught :) my partners desperate for a pedicure so ill get my practice in lol

Thank you! Doesn't soaking affect normal nail polish in the same way?

Also I remember seeing a long thread on here about soaking fingernails and most people saying don't do it for the reason that it makes polish not last as long. So is it different for toenails? Sorry I haven't my pedicure training yet xx

Footlogix is a great line for footcare. Their cream mousses with clotrimazole also address the problem that many people have and mistake for dry heels - a foot infection, or "athlete's foot". Your client's calluses will never go away if they are the result of an infection. They will shortly recur in a few days after your pedicure, as you can never completely smooth infected skin. A fungal infection can be a scaley edge or a fine, lacey ruffle around the heel. Also, an owner of a disinfection company told me at a beauty show that cracks in the heels is fungus, fungus, fungus!! (There is a lot of fungus going on in the world, and I bet alot is on the floor at airport security - another reason to use Footlogix #7+ before you leave home, and it comes in retail travel size !! )

The Footlogix company can educate you on the very important subject of athlete' foot to help your clients, and to help protect yourself as a working technician.

If you are not familiar with Moccasin Tinea Pedis, you may want to look it up on the internet. In my state we are not permitted to work on infected feet, and I would roughly say about 80% of clients have some type of foot or toenail infection. It is necessary to know how to recognize an infection to protect yourself and your other clients, and to know when to "suggest", not diagnose, when someone needs to address an infection with over-the-counter anti-fungal treatment or see a foot care specialist/podiatrist. If you educate yourself on great footcare you will become a Footcare Rockstar to your clients.

I could go on and on and on, but I will stop here .

PS - You also need to know the difference between the effectiveness of fungicidal creams containing terbinafine (Lamisil) and butenafine (Lotrimin Ultra) vs. the clotrimazole in Footlogix. The first two over the counter creams are needed to clear the infection, the clotrimazole in Footlogix is more for great preventative maintenance. Clotrimazole slows growth of fungus, but may not clear it completely. (Per Dr. Margaret E. Parsons, dermatologist)
