Taking photos with ring light, help!

Hi
I purchased a ring lamp to get better lighting in my dark room for taking photos. I have a lot of clients in the evening so needed some form of "daylight". Where do you position these lamps and do you take the photo from the normal position or through the hole of the ring light if that makes sense. Im not getting good photos at all!
Do you still use a flash?
Help!
