When it comes to sunbeds, England is surprisingly behind the times. Wales and Scotland have already tightened up protocol surrounding their use making unmanned sunbed salons illegal.
New legislation has been proposed by the All Part Paliamentary Group on Skin (APPGS) including a ban on such salons, compulsory adherence to the European standard for an 0.3w/m2 limit for sunbed lamps, mandatory screening of clients' skin and provision of safety booklets and goggles.
Currently, it is the responsibility of local authorities to ensure that sunbeds in their area comply with the European standard, but the APPGS are suggesting that this becomes a nationwide legislation.
Gary Lipman of The Sunbed Association supports the move but suggests that more could be done. "Any issues about sunbed use can only exist when sunbeds are abused and used irresponsibly by people who should not and cannot tan. Therefore, it is disappointing that the final recommendations did not go as far as to require all salon staff to be properly trained."
