I’ve got my own business doing hair extensions and I am wondering if anyone has some tips on opening a salon for hair extensions

Uk, London Surrey

Hi,

With regards to opening up a whole salon for just hair extensions, you are limiting yourself because the salon I work in is an extensions specialist salon but we do cutting, colour etc.

I totally think it's great for you to progress onto a salon, but I think you should look at hiring a space, a studio where you can have two-three sections and go from there, rather than a salon.

Our salon takes around 70-100k from January-November & December around 130k with people buying gift vouchers and retail presents.

If you was to restrict yourself to only extensions in the salon industry you would need to be an established brand such as beautyworks, easilocks, where people would travel just to have their brand in the hair.

You are obviously very successful anyway (I have followed your instagram for a long time).

With also looking to have basins installed in a studio, thats probably not applicable for anywhere unless you signed a lease.

Also in Los Angeles. my friend tells me in their salon all clients must come with freshly washed hair for their installation, although impossible if you are doing tape extensions, keratin & remove and want to apply them the same day. It is kind of inappropriate to make a client leave the premises with glue in their hair etc.

So many things to think about for you.

If you look at having a franchise with a big chain such as Rush, you only have to invest £15,000 and their fee percentage they take yearly is the lowest of all of the chains. This would allow you to have your own salon and not have to invest 100k of your own money, bank loans etc. Although within a year you must maintain the salon & create revenue for the salon and be able to manage the salon.

No successful business person didn't take risks & it looks like you're ready to move onto the next big step in your life.

I shall be poised to see your progress with what you eventually do.

Happy New Year

Hey Charlotte,

Thankyou so much for that amazing advice, I totally agree!

I think I will build my brand up as much as I can and then open up a salon hopefully for 2020 if my brand is big enough... & include colour services because to be honest I have clients that always need their roots doing so like you said I would need basins!

I am investing currently in hair wholesale that is affordable russian remy hair, still in this process of testing etc, does your salon have your own hair brand if not what brand do you use?

Please tell me your instagram and I shall give you a follow back & thanks again for the support!

Happy new year to you also!

Regards,
Coral x
