I am wondering a few things about the qualifications needed to practice in the USA. I know that each state will have slightly different laws regarding things but I was wondering whether anyone could offer some general advice.

Would the Creative training I have be transferable in the USA?

Also, I am aware that nail techs need a licence in the usa, but is that for every tech, or just if you are wanting to work for yourself or open salon?

Any help much appreciated, as I can't seem to find much info out there on the subject.

Hi,
I can't give you a definite reply, and please dont take what i tell you as gospel. But, my business partner married an american guy about 3 years ago, and relocated to california where he lives. As you rightly say, each State has it's own qualification criteria and they're not (as far as i know) transferrable. Jackie had to re-study and resit all of her exams, even tho she had been qualified in uk for 20 odd years and had her CertEd in teaching. She said the beauty quals were dead easy but the exam included lots of info about the USA (ie population, etc), so you needed to learn that.

Also, the beauty / hair arrangement over there is slightly different ie beauty therapists do no tinting - it's done by hairdressers. Apparently the salon / hairdressers / cosmetologist / dermatologist / doctors / (get my drift?) set up is different, and they are lot further advanced in terms of skin care by laser etc.

If you want any more info let me know and I will pass your email to her, although she will obviously only know about where she is located.

Good luck
E

Every nail tech must have a license and be inspected by the state. There are alot of regulations as to permit where and how you nail salon can be established. Especially when working out of your house, it can get very complicated. You will have to retake the exam to qualify in the state you reside in. However, I am not sure if you can transfer you hours here or if you can just take the exam ,maybe you will be required to go through schooling the schooling and get the hours in the US again. I would contact the State Board of Cosmetology in the state you plan on moving and they are really easy in assisting you with any questions you might have. You can find this information on the internet. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for your thoughts ladies, that was pretty much what I was expecting. Just wondered whether there was anything that would mean I wouldn't have to start the process again, but that was wishful thinking really. lol

Thanks for your input.
