Just had an interview/audition, got to the second stage of the day but I just didn't get enough people sat down.

Has anyone ever do it before? I was told to re apply in 3/6 months, does everyone get told that or have I got a little bit of hope in the distance?

Anyone got any advise about getting in the beauty industry? I'm finding it soooo hard, but I'm guessing once you've got your foot in the door it gets a bit easier. Over the summer I've had about 10 interviews and only had one salon get back to me saying I hadn't managed to get the job and also Benefit Cosmetics today of course.

What more can I do? I'm level 2 qualified and starting level 3 in september, please tell me it gets better??? 😔

Benefit cosmetics are really hard to get in to so don't worry about it. Have you though of doing some agency work? My friend did agency work on branded makeup counters such as Chanel, claims ect. She now works for clarins and had been there a few years!

I disagree, it's not hard to get into I speak from experience because Funnily enough I did this a few months ago, I decided to go to a recruitment day, I had fun, got short listed, went back for the afternoon on the shop floor (totally pushed me outside my comfort zone!) but I did well,& got offered a position, but circumstances changed for me, making me unable to accept. As far as offering you advice for them it's all about product knowledge & bums on seats! It's all about sales (in a nice way!!) go for it again & get more ladies sat in that chair! Be confident get a little more familiar with their more popular products!! GOOD LUCK & DONT GIVE UP!! Xx

hey! I worked for Benefit a few years back. I kinda cheated in my interview. I went up to people and asked did they want a free mini makeover. It worked and I managed to sell some benetint inthe process. I found the job tough though because I was in a quiet location so I had to traffic stop all day. I found that it was more sales orientated than beauty orientated but if you can get into a busyer location I've heard its alot easier :)

Good luck Lady

Thank you. It was literally me not getting enough bums on my seat. I know the products and company inside out. I'll keep my chin up and re apply in few months thanks for the help and the comments have made me feel loads happier :)

How do you get agency work in brands, that sounds interesting?

Thanks again :)

I did agency work for around 6 months since moving to London, they sort of 'found' me to be honest but if you google beauty temp agencies near you you should find one!

It's great experience, you're completely thrown in at the deep end with a full column to contend with in some of the most exclusive salons/spas! I think it's been invaluable for me and has really boosted my CV! Good luck :) x

I agree that you need to get lots of bums sat in your seat. But i speak lots of other girls that have said it can be hard including girls that work for benefit! There very sales orientated and it's very much sell sell sell.

Look for beauty agency work near your location I'm sure you find something. I think that's a really good way to get into it! Good luck x

I did the same and I got a few people in the chairs but didn't sell much. To be honest I didn't like the running around the department store bothering people and asking them if they wanted to come with me for a mini makeover. I'm not a pushy person so knew straight away it wasn't for me. But I'm glad I tried it and at least I'm not wondering what if. I applied for a brow bar artist and silly me assumed I'd actually be doing eyebrows and makeup but they told us it was basically just selling makeup and rarely doing brows.
I'm much happier doing treatments than selling makeup.

Hi there, sorry to butt in - I finished working for Benefit 6 months ago. I was with them for 18 month and hated it 90% of the time! They are an awful company, pushy, bad pay and poor amount of commission, stupid targets, low level of allocation. I only sat down 2 people in my audition but they both spent about £70 each! Benefit want you to give them the earth but will give you peanuts in return. I would suggest look at BareMinerals they are meant to be brilliant. I'm your interview be yourself, focus on customer service and selling. Listen to what the customer wants then explain why they can't live without what your offering!
Hope that helped x

Hey sorry to butt in on a thread but I didn't want to start up a new one on the same subject.

I recieved a call today from Benefit saying I have an 'audition' in a few weeks in their store 1 hut away from me. I have spend almost all day ready up on every single product they have and what they are for & ingredients (I don't use much benefit myself mainly Inglot/Mac & many other brands. However, after reading up a few threads/blogs about this I am so nervous for the audition! I am usually bit too nervous about interviews because I spent a lot of time reading up on how to do interviews & appearance etc. when I was unemployed, but it seems like this is a pretty pressurised interview? Should I go for it anyways to see what happens it just leave it?

What have you got to lose?
Get yourself dressed up, hold your head high, walk in and show them what you're made of :)

If you don't go you will always be thinking "what if"...

Go gurl, if you want it go for it.

You are right I have nothing to lose really and even if I did somehow manage to get it then it's a foot in the door 😊 thank you!

I used to work for Benefit a while back and had someone email me asking for a few pointers for the audition so I've pasted what I wrote below (it's slightly edited and about 3 years old but should be useful to people) :

What will happen is there will be about 4 girls come into the store.
They'll be told a little bit about benefit and then will be shown how
to traffic stop people . Benefit is all about traffic stopping , our
motto is we must have bums on seats at all times , meaning if there
are no customers at the desk we have to find one in a different part
of the store and bring them back and sit them down ... to sell to of
course :)

They will then be given a quick demo of 4 benefit products which will
probably be You Rebel Tinted Moisturiser , High Beam , Porefessional ,
Benetint (these may change ) . But I would tell her to look these
products up and get to know them a bit better. There is a tag line
that you must remember for each product for you rebel it's " a
defiantly different tinted moisturiser" , High beam is "super model
in a bottle " Porefessional is " complexion perfection in a tube" and
benetint is "the sexiest flush in a bottle" . So if she knew these
before hand it might be an advantage because the quicker you pick
things up the better you look and its all about the first impressions.

Tell her to wear something trendy, there all about the way you look ,
so if she looks well they'll warm to her instantly.

I would also advise her to have a little think about what make up she
is going to wear , I wore a red lip with winged eyeliner a tiny tiny
bit of blush because i knew they were going to apply make up out over
my make up , one girl i auditoned with had way to much blusher on and
when the tinted moisturiser when out over it , it looked terrible !!!
I would go for the simple base foudation , no powder over it or it
will go cakey , contour the face, tiny tiny bit of blusher and then
winger eyeliner because at least it will look polished but you wont'
look silly after they put more make up on you, pay particular
attention to the brows too because we're very brow focused due to our
brow bar. Stay away from any brightly coloured eyeshadows as this does not fit into benefits look.

They'll then split the girls into pairs and and each will take turns
to apply the products to the other girl while remembering the lines
they were given and they'll prob do a bit of role playing traffic
stopping each other. The main thing to remember with traffic stopping
is to never ask a question that someone will immediately say no to
like "would you like to try some benefit make up ? " That never works
, you have to ask , Have you tired porfessional yet , which will
usually get answer by , whats porefessional , then this is the brazen
bit you have to be super confident and say really casually "come over
here for a second and i'll show you , it's amazing etc .... "
the manager will go through all this on the day anyway but just so she
knows.

She'll then spend about 3 hours on the floor wandering through the
store trying to get people to sit down and demo the products and
ultimately to sell them as much as she can. When you first do it can
be soul destroying when you can't get anyone to sit down but tell her
if she just keeps her head and thinks of it as a numbers game ( ask
everyone !!!) she'll get there . I would also tell her to go for the
older lady , they're usually good buyers :D She'll also have to be
quite an aggressive sales person , when we finish doing a demo we
always end with something like , What were you favorite items there
today .... will i get those for you ? Do you need any of those items
today ? etc be quick with every customer and if they are not commiting
get rid of them fast and move on the next one, if she does get a sale
tell her to stay with her customer till the products are through the
till (someone else will do this) and the customer has left , this
shows a good level of customer service and will be something they'll
watch out for

If she's not doing well in the traffic stopping session they'll tell
her she's not been sucessful this time and send her home, she also has
the choice to go home herself if she feels the job just isn't for her.

If she lasts the 3 hours they'll be a short interview afterwards with the manager, the best thing she could do is say that she would love to work
for benefit just have her name assosiated with such a fanatastic brand
and she also has to show that she
has bags of energy left after the audition , thats a really important
one , i know theres a little box at the end of the interview sheet
that says tick if they look tired and if its ticked she won't be
succesful.

It's a very hard job , much harder than any other cosmetic counter and
it's not for everyone , having said that when you do get your foot in
the door with benefit and have a bit of experience you become sought
after by all the other counters because of the aggressive sales
techniques you'll learn !

Wow Noreen thank you so so much! That really does help and Im gonna read over that a few times and decide what makeup & clothes to wear! Xx

Ok so few more questions (sorry to annoy!).

I had a phonecall interview from them this morning which i really wasn't expecting, then she explained that I would go up for the recruitment day, if I make it through that I will be called back for the audition process in the afternoon and then do the audition and a trade test (have to do trade test because im BS as I would just have to do audition if I was going for BA?!)and then interview.

1. Im guessing Bs means beauty specialist and BA is beauty assistant?
2. In the trade test will it be to apply a full face of make up, or more than that?
3. She said dress to impress so would it make a good impression to wear a nice black dress, blazer and nice shoes or should I wear trousers?
4. Makeup wise: should I go for my everyday brown smokey eyes and nude lips or red lips and eyeliner flick to stand out more?

Sorry for all the questions Im so nervous!

Thanks again Noreen! Oh im really nervous I am not good at waxing at all as I haven't done it since college and I just do threading! I don't own a lot of benefit makeup and im worried that if. Wear other brands it will look bad but I have no other choice! :(
