Just for fun..... Should I keep a bit of that root?

If any of you are so kind to answer--

I have some great level 2 roots growing out that I think I might finally be getting sick of. I previously had my hair bleached (twice on the same day) at a salon in Harajuku last summer. I'm not entirely sure what bleach they used, but I assume it works great on thick hair, being that it was in Japan. My hair turned out pretty well, my hair is not at all fine.

I do love the roots and I'm thinking about either bleaching them entirely or leaving a bit. Anyway, there's a lot of information out there and I want to know what the absolute best products and strength of bleach/toner/etc. would be for thick, resilient Mexican girl hair.

I also read about a backcombing technique on into the gloss to keep the roots? I want to make it look as natural as possible. I'm not entirely sure what they mean by painting the backcombed section or whether that would even be a good way to go about it.

Slider_1_-_The_Proper_At-Home_Bleaching_Technique

From Into the Gloss:

"You just take a chunk of hair and back-comb about half of it up from the ends. Then, bleach everything that's backcombed, so when you brush it out again you don’t get the hard line of demarcation. It's so easy, I don’t even tone it or anything. I think for the girls, however, you do need to tone it so that it grows a little more beautiful, but for the boys it’s really great to bleach it and leave alone. Even if it’s a little yellow, it looks kind of cool—like school-bus blonde. Then I do the Christophe Robin purple mask, otherwise it just goes dull. "

That Cristophe Robin purple mask is $51. Necessary for an excellent blonde? Also, thinking about updating the entire color into a real blond (it was pre-bleached to go beige/pink) once I'm finished fixing these overgrown roots-- so maybe the Cristophe Robin would be good all over? Still debating over a cooler or warmer blond. Thoughts please!

Hi Sarah!

Please visit a reputable salon for colouring services.
We do not offer DIY colouring advice on this forum.

Thank you for your understanding.

I can, but I'm not looking to go that route. I'll just do it myself and figure it out like many of the people here have. Passion starts with trying it yourself, right? :)

I'm not keen on frying my hair off, but I would like to learn from someone who might know how to accomplish this. I also have higher standards than most, so going to a salon doesn't really help me much and neither do the usual DIY forums. If anyone else wants to offer some good products or knows whether that technique would work, do let me know.

But like @AcidPerm said no pro will give advice to a non pro on here as it is against the forum rules!

Using a box dye and using home bleach products can go very wrong! We see a lot of these in our careers!

I used a reputable very popular home bleach kit before I started training I had shoulder length excellent condition hair, a mixture of light ash brown and very light blonde highlights with about 3 months growth on (more brown to blonde) so considerably lighter than what you are now. I got bored so i used a home bleach kit and ended up pulling my hair out the sink, it all snapped off I was only just able to tuck my hair behind my ears and I had to have it cut like Victoria beckhams when she had her blonde concaved Bob!

So from someone who is in the industry and who messed up her own hair with home bleach I really advice you to find a salon or at least try a college or school rather than doing it yourself! X

Higher standards then most so going to a salon doesnt help? Wuuutt

I'm not looking to use bleach kits, only high quality products used in better salons and good techniques that will give me that look above without going bald! Sorry for your mishap, that sounds pretty terrible. And thanks for the heads up, I didn't know it was against forum rules to respond, I just thought people were being kinda snooty with the lack of responses, but it's good to know that's not the case. I looked through the forum already to find some better bleach brands, but I'm still doing my research on techniques and products my own. :/

Only because I haven't had too many good salon experiences. And spending even more for a celebrity colorist still comes with a risk and a far drive into the city. I'd rather learn how to achieve the look I want on my own rather than spending a lot on that risk/monthly upkeep....

Im an experienced hairdresser and would never do my own hair with bleach.... pretty difficult not to damage it in the process

Higher standards would be going to a high end salon and having it done. Doing it yourself is pretty low standard... Lots of people are of the opinion 'oh nobody can do their job properly so i'll do it myself' then they brand all hairdressers as rubbish and don't trust anyone, thinking they can do it better.

Yes some hairdressers go through 3-4 years of training and literally may as well not have done it because they're still idiots but thats only a minority.

You have to go to a VERY reputable salon that specialises in colour correction and has colour technicians. You've got to have faith.

And if you're adamant that you want to do it yourself then... Well its your funeral.

That's precisely why I research and ask. And trying to find a very reputable salon is definitely a good solution, much easier to just have someone do it for me, but it's also only for the very wealthy and for those that are ready to pay rather than learn a skill. I'm very aware of the consequences and that people do train for a very long time to do these risky things. But I'm only posting for answers, tips, certain products, techniques, etc. with my hair type to keep in mind. The internet is full of information regarding at-home bleaching, but they mostly use cheaper products and are for different hair types and goals. I'm only looking for helpful answers written by people who might actually know a thing or two pertaining to my question. I'm not looking for a warning.

Since I don't think people here are willing to spend time divulging their secrets, does anyone happen to know a reputable site that carries this sort of information? It's either that or the helpful salon experts on Reddit. Thanks.

Sarah it's pretty insulting to come on here and keep asking what to use when you've been given the correct advice. We don't want you to be taking your hair home in a bag. And that happens. A lot. With home bleaching!

And regards to "our" secrets... Years and years and many tears of training and money on education is what you are getting when you go to trained professional.

I wish you luck in your journey!

I'm not asking for advice at this point. I just want to explain that there is a difference between doing your research and not doing your research. Not all home coloring ends with a disaster. I find it pretty insulting that people on here seem to think that it is in fact black in white because of schooling, that only people that have been working with bleach for a long time should be the only ones permitted to bleach my hair. I'm not going to say that a first time trial in my own bathroom would going to be amazing, but it would be getting somewhere with community help and products and answers from open-minded and helpful people. It's not something I can do perfectly on my own as a first-timer, but I also know that there are a tons and tons of people who do their own roots by themselves without any issues at all. I realize I'm posting in the wrong area of the internet, and that I'm better off asking an experienced friend (albeit with a different hair type and end-goal) or Reddit (I've been given some really amazing and thorough advice in other sectors). But I don't think my question should be shut down when asked. The words and attitudes in the responses to my post haven't been very understanding.

I think the point of this thread is just to remind everyone to be a bit more courteous to people who ask questions and seek help. Even if it's on an seemingly anonymous space on the internet. It is supposed to be a helpful community, even though my particular question seems to be out of place.... I was not aware. I do realize that these sorts of posts are probably common and seem like a bother to this forum. But I didn't know I was asking in the wrong place.

Apologies if I insulted anyone's expertise. That wasn't my intention, I just wanted to pick brains to be a bit more educated on this type of undertaking. I'm currently looking elsewhere.

I don't think people are being rude or insulting. Bleaching hair is very technical and I don't think any professional would advise you on how to go about it as if it all goes wrong who are you going to blame? Professionals need to see and feel a clients hair to decide on methods and products. So I'm sure no professional on here would want to be blamed for your hair being ruined. Good luck though and I hope your hair turns out how you want it [emoji3]

We aren't being mean girls and we don't 'do hair' just because we like to chit chat all day.

Most of the geeks on here have spent ££££/$$$$ training so that we can earn our own living, pay rent, buy food etc. Few of us are likely to get rich from this trade. Paying the bills and just surviving is how most of us live, especially in the US where you don't have a proper minimum wage structure and many staff rely heavily on tips just to manage.

If we were to spend our spare time advising potential clients to DIY, we'd soon end up with no clients and would become destitute.

So, do us a favour and pay a professional to make it pretty or opt to DIY and pay a professional even more money to fix it afterwards.

It's your choice. :)

Like I said in my previous post it is also against the forum rules to give out advice/information to a non pro on how to do their hair/tan/nails/waxing

In the last 3 weeks I have seen 2 clients gone from long hair to a short haircut due to home bleaching. YouTube makes it look sooo easy. These girls now have a good 2 years of growing to do before it gets close to the length they had before!
Saying that I fancy giving myself a bit of a a facelift, I'm sure it can't be that hard, any tips?

So we should expect clients to come to us just so WE can make a living rather than the main priority being in their best interest!

What an odd response. It's not either one or the other surely?
