I'm not a hairdresser and luckily don't have this issue as a nail tech. My other half is actually allergic to cigarette smoke - perhaps when you arrive before they spark up you could mention that you have recently been to the doctors where they found out you are allergic to something in cigarette smoke?

x

Hiya! Alot, infact all of my clients are recommended, so friends, or friends of friends etc so I don't think I could keep that up :-/ there'd be too many questions lol. but maybe others on here can :)

P.s, bet thats so annoying for your oh because its everywhere!

Yeah I could remove the gown an leave cape/towels on as they get binned/ bagged up after anyway.
I also use a really big ghetto blaster bag with all my blowdrying equipment in could just take in what I need in a separate bag so that doesn't smell.

Or just start coughing dramatically when they spark up haha! X
:-D It's annoying but that's what I would do in your situation, it's tricky as you are in their home but also they are paying you to carry out a service, I would cough as well as removing myself and packing away tools that cant be disinfected like the dryer etc..They probably haven't even thought about the fact it might affect you!!

Thats awful :-( you did right. You'd think as soon as you'd mentioned it they'd realise and apologise profusely and open all windows!
I would anyway! X

I know! I was thinking 'do you really hate my unborn child that much!?' lol I didn't feel I had the right to tell her what to do in her own home, but I was so peed off doing the rest of her hair I was struggling to make conversation all I was thinking was 'get me out of here'!

Have you thought about doing the business for real so you don't have to put up with things like this?

I think the OP is very much "doing it for real" just because she isn't salon based!

I have to say if I went for a treatment be it hair or beauty and the person/place or equipment smelt of smoke I wouldn't return. Its difficult doing it mobile though, i would perhaps go along the lines another geek suggested mentioning pets etc and if yoy have a Facebook page or website put it in your terms.

Do you really care though? Im a non smoker and my family smoked infront of me in pregnancy, never bothered me. Neither would I ever send someone out my house for smoking even with a baby. I go on nights out and sit in smoking rooms doesnt bother me at all and would not bother me in some else's house. I suppose its personal choice, I liked the days you could smoke in pubs and as someone who know many doctors (who smoke) they will you smokers are the slimmest but they don't like to print stuff like that we all have to now live in some left wing nanny state where smoking, gay marriage and recycling are hot topic s! Actually salon geek is swifty becoming a cross between the socialist worker and the guardian for snippers and nails techs!

As a smoker myself I think that it is my personal choice to smoke, but I wouldn't want to force others to breath in my smoke, especially around children since it is particularly harmful for them. If smokers are the slimmest, then I must be in the minority lol.

Sounds like you are getting a political there, I have no idea what you mean about marriage equality and the environment lol.

You are the most random member of salon geek that I have ever come across! keep it up you're funny :)

Eternalscot - Yes I do care!!!!!
The last time I smoked a cigarette I was sicking up blood (and I have only smoked about 1 in my life). When I am around it, it makes me feel unwell and I cough badly even when my OH has had one and then comes near me. Cigarettes are not a laughing matter. It says smoking kills on the box for a reason...
Clearly it doesn't affect you personally as much as me but smokers need to be aware that some people cannot tolerate it. x

I am personally a smoker and I abolutely hate it when a client smokes while I'm doing there hair... not because of the smell but because my equipment smells like cigarettes. I wouldn't smoke while someone is doing my hair I would just include it in the appointment reminder about the pets and smoking. I personally hate it when my clients have pets inside and when they're around me :(

I totally agree with you, I am a smoker but I always try to keep my distance from non smokers. Some people just don't tolerate it, non smokers are used to it and don't know that for non smokers it can really annoy them and not only that they cannot tolerate it sometimes.

I care! It's not just the same as being in the same room as a smoker it's standing right behind someone and the smoke coming up into your own mouth and eyes! I would definitely not let anyone smoke around me when pregnant or around my baby! It's just disrespectful! X

This is extremely over played! The damage of
occasional passive smoking. I must have such a goid constitution to live through lead paint on cots, no seatbelts, being smacked by teachers, smoking, playing in the street and walking to and from school. Its a miracle im alive. Im glad you wish to live in a nanny state, it is my idea of hell. In Spain you have non smoking and smoking pubs so there is personal choice perhaps there could be smoke friendly mobiles. I do not like freedom of choice to be taken away from
people. :D

It only becomes a 'nanny state' when you don't like a particular rule! Ultimately they are there to protect everyone else as well. No one complains that not being able to drive whilst drunk is talking away 'personal choice' because obviously that could harm other people.

Smokers still have the personal choice to smoke, just not in a way that will also harm others.

On a side note, just this week another study showing the effects of passive smoking on childeren: 'Clear evidence' of passive smoking: study

Cright fine so lets their be smoking and non smoking pub and restaurants and beauty salons and let others go to non smoking establishments that's choice! . People shoukd have choice like its no mistake all these lets recycle its all about getting you to conform as half the stuff you send doesnt recycled all just so you conform. Same with taxing cars endlessly to get us to go on communist public transport. Not to mention the social engineering or having housing benefit renters next to mortgage holders e.g like me in a £350k home.

Lovely, so you've said it yourself then...people should have a choice....so the OP should have a choice as to whether or not she works with smoke in her eyes/nose/mouth/hair etc. and if she chooses not to accept this from her client she is well within her right to do so. I'm so pleased we all agree.............!!!!!!!!! (And what on Earth has it got to do with living in a nanny state or the price of your house?! Come down off your high horse and give some constructive advice).

The clients home may not become a "place of work" as such, but we are working and doing our jobs in their homes while we are there. I would expect a little more respect from a client than to smoke right next to me without asking if I minded, I don't even accept this from friends. I would ask her politely to nip outside, or would politely excuse myself from the room. If its in your eyes, how can you see to cut her hair straight anyway?!

Lol!! This isn't the house of commons its salon geek..
