Hi can anyone advice me on how to repair acrylic nails.
Yes it is for my assigment, question is - how to repair and infill nails?
I know how to do infills, actually i'm putting the theory into practise tomorrow night, but as for repairs, i'm not sure, i supose it depends on the type of damage, but i would of thought soak off and replace.
I have spent a long time today looking on this site, as i think it has answers to most our querries, i found a few saying soak off and some saying, clean and dry and glue, that was for a crack, but what about other repairs, i have also seen about fibre glass repairs, would i go down this line???
i'm realy not sure. nothing has been mentioned to us at college about repairs, actually she not said much about infills either, again i had my own idea, then read the wonderful tutorial's, have infilled my own since and must say, great advice.
Sorry to go on, just i no you experts aren't meant to just give us the answers, i just wanted you to see that i have been reasearching.
Also i have just been chosen to do a set of nails for the EV next week, have passed 2 assessments so far, so things not going to bad.
Thanks any one that is able to help me out.

The kind of repairs one needs to do in the salon do not always require you to soak off and start again ... in fact, I can't think of the last time I ever soaked off a nail to repair it. I would only soak off if the product was badly discoloured or there was a bacterial infection present or pocket lifting was so bad that the whole overlay had to be removed.

The typical sort of repairs you would need to carry out would be.
  • repair any lifting
  • repair a broken/missing nail tip or corner
  • repair a cracked nail across the stress area or each side of the stress area
Lifting ... lifting needs to be removed by correct filing and then product reapplied (look at the tutorials)

Broken/missing nail tip or corner ... This is one of the easiest repairs to do. Tidy up the edge of the break, sanitise and Apply a form and sculpt a new zone 1/tip or corner.

For a crack across the stress area thin the product as for down as you can making sure there is no lifted material, sanitise and reapply a new zone 2.

For small cracks in the corners of the smile ... use the edge of your file very carefully along the small crack and remove any loose or lifted material in such a manner as to end up with a 'pie' shaped area where the crack was. Sanitise and Re-apply new product in the area.

Almost every repair involves removing or thinning some product away so that you can reapply. Thankfully it is not normally necessary to soak off and start again.

Thank you very much Geeg for all that info,it has helped me lots
i have already read your tutorials on the infill, which covered the lifting, i didn't realise that was classed as a repair, sorry. But your tips certainly did the trick when i filed down my nails last night, i started at the free edge just like you said and worked my way down and that sorted all the lifting. Fingers crossed i wont get lifting this time, hopefully done a better job after reading the tutorials.
Thanks again.
