Hey Geeks!

I was just wondering what your views are having a licence to practise beauty therapy/nails/holistic etc. I know the Uk doesnt have and policies in place unlike america, but wondered would it make the industry a better place to work, or a waste of time?

Yes yes yes.... there are so many "therapists" out there without proper qualifications and have no knowledge of the very basic elements of our trade... Bring it on those of us with good qualifications will not mind at all I expect.

My local council issues licences and inspects.

In theory it is a good idea, but you can bet your bottom dollar it would be a tick-box jobsworth with no idea about the industry telling us no NVQ no workee. For those of us with C&G qualifications or others, it would end up an expensive nightmare.

Who EXACTLY would you trust to draw up the legislation and administer it properly?

I totally agree! In an ideal world, if you pass any qualification which is accredited by a beauty organisation no matter how small the treatment, you should be entitled, but like u sed its all about tick boxes :(

I would happily trust any beauty professional bodies such as Habia, cause at least they the have knowledge, but the majority wont agree, cause its more money/time etc.

Not having a rant here, but its a similiar argument to ID cards, there are people that dont want them, even though in my personal opinion i dont mind the idea :)

Did you know that 50% of a salon turnover now goes in various forms of taxes? Another one would not be helpful. We already pay;
vat
corporation tax
employers ni
climate charge levy
business rates
prs license
local authority license fees

I think that is quite enough.

I personally wouldn't want to see one come into place, as like all of these things it will just be another expense for next to no benefit. Out of interest there has been a push for regulation by holistic therapists, and a voluntary scheme is in now place, but cost aside when I've spoken to compulsory regulated professionals (such as chirporactors & nurses) few of them believe it has stopped bad practice or had any significant impact beyond that previously provided by membership of professional bodies.
