Hi,
Recently purchased a salon and having spoken to Samantha (a great ambassador for the industry) would appreciate any lessons learnt and to hear individual preferences on renting chairs versus employing technicians - I need one asap! Help, thanks Jeff.. ** Just re-red this and I haven't made it very clear! It is a nail technician I need, DOH! **

Hi, I generally employ stylists but also have one chair renter who pays a set weekly amount and provides everything for herself. I make more money from the employed staff even after stock costs /employment costs. the chair renter has no use of my staff/ stock/ equipment nor is she given clients. I would struggle to cover overheads with just chair renters plus the vat rules are complex regarding the subject.
employees abide by the salon hours and rules plus the clientele belongs to the salon rather than the stylist.

Hi, when I started out I employed all my staff, I found that as employees they got really lazy, treatments would take longer, if they had no clients they didnt care as getting paid anyway and if someone walked in off the street they would try turn them away if they could not be bothered to do the treatment. Also I had one therapist that went on maternity twice in the space of 2 years which cost me as I had to pay them, keep the job open and recruit a replacement. :irked:

Now all the staff rent rooms and I find it works alot better because they know they have to do the work or they dont get paid. I work it on a percentage basis and still supply the products. Suddenly the therapist are fighting over the clients rather than turning them away. It has definatly boosted my takings and we are all lot happier! :)

Hello, i personally have only ever employed technicians, but my dad, is a very succesful hairdresser, and has been for 40 years. very strong business accumen.
He has just swapped all of his stylist to rent a chair. many of these stylists have worked for him for 11years or so and one for 30 years so all loyal and trustworthy.
This works for him because he is now slowing down a bit heading for retirement and doesnt want the hassle of, sick, maternity, holidays and everything else that goes with staff. he has 9 stylists who rent a chair. works well for him.he provides a receptionist, they all have seperate stock areas, supply there own stuff. one thing my dad has said is the staff are very rarely ill, and work so many more hours. He gets a set high end salon weekly rent, regardless to if they are busy, sick, on holiday etc... the stylist are making more money for themselves, so they are happy. all in all a good business decision made i reckon.:):)

Emmie b, why do you employ yours? It is Nail Technicians I was refering to, just forgot to mention it on my original question...

I did only employ nail technicians/beauty therapists when i had my salon, thats because i am a control freak lol:) i like things done my way, i used to take a trainee every year, they would train with companies i wanted them to train with and they would work exactly the same as i did. i found this way easier to maintain standards and if treatments werent up to scratch they had me to answer to, not just themselfs. i did once however have a profit share nail tech, who helped herself to my whole client database whilst i was on holiday and then went on to open her own salon 13 doors down the high street. but thats another story!!
the only problem i see with renting a table in the current climate, is risk!! people dont want to risk much these days or simply cant afford too. But i am sure there are plenty 0of tech's looking for secure employment.
good luck in your new venture.

This is the problem i am dealing with at the moment, I have a clinic and i have lots of different therapists that rent my rooms, Sports therapist, Holistic Therapist, Hairdressers, still looking for my nail technition and i am the beauty therapist in which i have built up a great client base, but i have decided that i want to just run the clinic, Advertising, greeting and dealing with the customers so what do i do employ or profit share ? I want to be in control but dont really want the hassle of maternity leave etc

Help !!!

hope u dont mind me asking but how much do u charge and do they pay any towards phone bills etc considering doing same thing thanks
