My mother has been having gel/acrylic on & off on her nails for the past 6 months or so but they had got very sore and had deep red 'crack' lines appearing down the middle of a couple of fingers. This, I think, was due to her previous nail tech over-filing her natural nail - even when she informed them that what she was doing was hurting.
She has since had them removed, I did this myself very gently once they had a little time to heal. She has had them off now for over 3 weeks (using cuticle oil daily) but her nails seem to be getting worse. Although the red cracks & soreness have gone her nails seems to be lifting away from her skin where her natural smile line would be. The edges of her natural smile line are no longer a sharp line but seem to be growing backwards at the sides if this makes sense? Hard to explain.
I have told her that there's no way I am going to do any gel/acrylic on them until they are fully restored but would like any advice on what might speed this up & help her nails to regrow properly??
Thanks

Wow, that almost sounds like typical MMA damage! But it could be one of many things that we as Nail Techs are not qualified to diagnose. You should send her to a doctor. It could be anything from Reynaud's to a thyroid condition to the MMA damage. All of wich need treatment and time.

Thanks for the reply, I will send her on her way to the doctor. x

It sounds very much like Onycholysis to me, caused by over zealous filing of the nail plate by her previous tech. However, as I cannot actually see them it's hard to say, also, as said, we are not supposed to diagnose.

IF that is what it is, the best thing to do would be to keep them as short as possible to avoid them getting pulled anymore. Continue using the solar/cuticle oil too. Don't push the oil down the nail, causing more stress, just allow it to drip down under the nail. They should re-attach eventually.

This is a pic of Onycholysis (seperation of the nail plate from the nail bed)...

Ahh Fantastic thank you. This is exactly what her nails look like, only not quite as severe. Thanks very much.x
