Damaged natural nail

Hey lovely’s!
So one of my friends came round today. And he has this on his nail...

He’s not my client or anything just need to make that clear 😂

he said the bit that almost looks like dead cuticle is actually his nail but it’s growing upwards rather than along the nail bed! And there is literally a whole part which is just skin. No nail has grown so it’s not even that it’s come away as it just stopped growing if that makes sense. I’ve never seen anything like this... can anyone advise what it is? I did of course advise to go to a gp. X

No way of knowing, could be trauma, could be psoriasis, could be a self inflicted habit tick, could have been fungal but now healing, too many questions to make an informed assumption.
