I used http://www.designmantic.com/. My logo is my avatar. I am extremely pleased withe it and get many compliments.

I use both and highly recommend

Unless you really know what you're doing it's not worth the time and effort of trying to do it yourself.

Try fiverr, there's loads on there and pretty reasonable too
