I'm specifically wondering about the Brisa gel system. I have an opportunity to purchase some at a good price (older packaging I think) but I want to make sure I'm not getting potentially expired product.

It depends on how it has been stored/kept. No product is guaranteed for more than a year by any manufacturer.

How do you know that all has not gone solid in the pots??
Do you have a chance to see the products before purchase??
If no I would not risk my money.

I would be more concerned about how I was purchasing the product than by an expiry date where gel is concerned.

Is the purchase through an auction site like Ebay? Is it through a friend or aquaintance? Do you know the person who is selling the product and as Geeg says, have you had an opportunity to see the opened products?

The gels could be contaminated or messy, eg, had glitter brushes dipped in them which is not ideal if you want clear gel. The gels could also be gloopy or partially set from exposure to UV rays. Why is the person selling?

These are the questions I would be asking and this is why it is always important to go through reputable channels unless you know the person who is selling the gels well.

It's from an overstock clearing house several states away so I can't physically see it prior to purchase, but they have always been good about returns if there is a problem... Thanks for the input, it's all stuff I knew, but having someone else remind you of it is sometimes important.

Don't know about the U.S., but here in the U.K. one can only purchase legitimate and garanteed Brisa from a specific and recognized distributors.

If I were you, I would check that this clearing house is a legitimate Brisa distributor. Can't say more than that!
