Hi everyone
Im new on here, basically i would love some advice, i am a professional dancer but have always from a young age done hair on the side, my friends and now friends of friends, i have a massive passion for it and as I'm 25 and have some experience in doing hair i am looking at fast tracks.
i have had a look at
vidal sasson
toni and guy
alan d
saks
has anyone done any of these courses and or know much about them. i recently when in to have a chat with alan d academy and saks, the saks fast track they do now is a little to long and i showed them my portfolio and they said i would be better off doing there advanced cutting and colouring courses which are cheaper and a lot quicker, but i feel like i would really like to gain an nvq 2.
any help at all would be really appreciated.
:) jay

I've private messaged you

thank you,any advice would be great x

I personally think that if you're serious about doing it then you should spend the time learning properly and not fast tracking and rushing your way through things. I worked with a couple of people who fast tracked and they didnt have a clue x

i under stand where your coming from and i agree that a lot of people most likely wouldn't have a clue at the end of a fast track, but i feel for a nvq2 and with the experience i have had from doing hair on the side for around 8 years, all be it not trained and hours and hours of watching on youtube and watching in salons, a fast track in a well respected academy would be the way forward for me. x

Hi Jay,

If you can afford to do the Sassoon courses, it will be worth it.

Some colleges might be prepared to 'fast track' you through the assessments for your NVQ level 2. You'll struggle to find employment in a salon and obtain professional liability insurance without a recognised level 2 qualification.

I agree with funtimefranko that some students graduating from fast track courses are clueless but you already have some experience and importantly, a desire to learn. Go for it!

When you say your experience with hair what do you mean? Youve cut hair? Or...

i have been cutting, colouring and doing hair extensions,

here is some pictures of my work, i know I'm not trained but i love it and willing to work very hard.

Its nice work how did you learn this? I still stand by not rushing but it depends in what you want to do

from trial and error and watching videos and trying out on training heads and my friends and family

I did hairdressing from the age of 11, litterally everything, I did it right up untill I was 23 "on the side" I've done my level 1,2 & 3 since and I have to admit I'm really glad I did, there's so much I diddnt know about, my actual hands on skills were obviously fine from the start as I'd had so much hands on experience, but knowledge is very important I think.

I couldn't agree more. A lot of hairdressers lack in theory which is a very important part in hairdressing.

thanks for your reply, i agree thats y i want to try and get my nvq

You've obviously got a natural flare for hairdressing if you could afford I to would get yourself on a sassoon course this is a proper NVQ and you will learn much more in a smaller group than if you had to go to college,
