Hi all!

I am confused over tax :-(

I am employed full time in an admin job so all my NI and tax is sorted out by my employers.

I am planning on doing a course in May in eyelash extensions so I can register as a self employed sole trader and do mobile eyelash extensions part time, mainly for friends, family and colleagues, hopfully building up a nice client base.

I have done my research into NI contributions, record keping..... but I am confused over if my full-time employment tax will be affected? Or if I will have to pay a higher self employed tax as I am employed full-time? I hope that makes sense!

Any help appreciated :)

Lauren.

Hi,

Your tax return will have boxes for you to declare you're employed status. You will then pay tax and NI on your self employed takings as well. It sounds like your tax allowance has been used up on your employed earnings, so you'll pay tax and NI on all your self employed profit

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Am glad I started looking into setting up now and not in May, there is so much to know and do!

Good to know its in the tax return.

Hi,

Although I've never been in an employed/self employed situation, I think you can have your tax and NI contributions, from self employment, added to your weekly PAYE contributions. You might find easier than paying in two big lump sums.... I definitely think it's worth phoning HMRC and finding out about:)

if you ring HMRC they do courses for newly self employed they will talk you through everything, or speak also to your local business link they have some excellent courses for people thinking about self employment
