Hi
I'm a newbe to this site and to the nail industry. I have completed a Man and Ped course at night school and also a Foundation Acrylic course, all of which I passed.
I am really struggling with doing my own nails and getting up my speed - I'm that fustrated now that I've just said to my husband that i'm going to and get my own nails done in a salon. I also use a UV top coat with a UV lamp and I keep getting bubble appearing on the nail once i've cured it! I keep having to file it off and start again, does anyone know why this keeps happening?
I'm also reaaaaallllly struggling with getting my smile line good - some are really good and other just look terrible, I know alot of it is practice makes perfect but i'm getting so fustrated that I feel like giving up sometimes, completely. Being successful is so important to me as I have given up my job as a manager of a travel agency after I had my first baby to do nails as the hours are more suitable for childcare too.
I have always loved doing my own and other peoples nails and i'm getting really down about not being able to do it!
Sorry for the rant but I really need a bit of advice!!???:irked:

Hi

I'm a newbe to this site and to the nail industry. I have completed a Man and Ped course at night school and also a Foundation Acrylic course, all of which I passed.

Unfortunately your profile doesn't give any indication of your experience or how long you have been doing nails or whether you are using Gels or L&P for enhancements? A bit more information would help to answer some of your questions without groping in the dark.

Hi Alison and welcome to the site.

Thank you for giving somemore information in your profile which makes the job allot easier

It seems that you are very new to the nail industry .. a matter of a month or so.

I think myself you are expecting way too much way to soon and you need to relax a bit and learn to do each part of the job perfectly and then move on and perfect another part. SPEED is the last thing you should be worrying about at this stage.

There are lots of things to help you. Application vidoes such as the CND videos which you can watch again and again particularly smile lines. There are tutorials here on the site also for smiles. There is the book 'nailclass' by gigi rouse that has been an amazing help to many regarding the techniques needed to do nails both beautifully and efficiently. I recommend you look at them all and study them all.

Nails is not a skill that takes a short time to learn. You're looking at a year of hard work and dedication to feel really competent and then you go on learning forever. That doesn't mean you can't start working in the field .. you'll have to in order to get the practice you need but you won't be 100% happy for a long while yet with the results.

Regarding your question re top coat gels, make sure the surace you are painting with the gel is completely clean and dry before yoo apply. If not you will see pitting on the surface .... make sure you do not touch the surface with your fingers afte cleaning.

Getting good smile line - you need practicing until you can deal with it, mine's is worse too.

Getting bubble appearing on the nail when cured - did you wipe and tapered your brush properly and apply without forcing by starting over zone 3, 2 and 1 downward to the free edge.

How long did you use you UV lamp and when did you change your bulb recently?

Struggling with doing your own nails - me too, especially it's not your right hand.

Speeding up - trial and error, learn by mistake, ask someone who trained as nail tech like classmate, teacher to look what you've done and checking which state you spend too much time. It's really help me a lot.

When you do self study - watch the video first see how they do but normally they will do it too perfect because they're Professional and it's video.

There are some unseen scenes that they might not show like wipe the brush, did the mistake or else so don't give up.

Listen to what technique they keep repeating like young nail - clean your brush, use the tip of your brush, side wall to side wall... try to do it...

Check for further tips and learn from somebody's else error by checking salon geek site. it's really help me too...

The key is practise get your self a nail trainer and just practise until you get it right.

I only passed my CND nail course on 16 Dec in acrylics. I take 4 hours to do a set of nails and 4 hours for infills!
My smile lines on the whole are horrendous, though they all match. Something i suppose. I have the odd smile line which is perfect then i go back to being horrendous.
I practise constantly, unfortunatly due to Christmas i have not been as diligent (sp) as i have been. I have done my own nails, over blended one nail and hit the natural nail bed (not good). I'm lucky as i have 3 girls and my mum who are very patient with me plus my nail trainer.
When i do nails i always do smile lines for practise, then paint over the top. Once i have mastered my smiles i wont need to hide them, lol.
My girls have glitter on now, i'm lucky as i find applying the acrylic easy and my tutor said my acrylic application is very good. I find i take ages preparing the nails and blending the tips. Blending the acrylic is ok.
I have 3 books which were recomended on here. Gigi Rouse Nail Glass, Marian Newman Nail Technician and Douglas Schoon Nail Structure and Product Chemistry. All brilliant books.
Dont give up. Practise and practise. Remember practise make perfect.
When i first done waxing i took 2 hours to wax a pair of legs, now i whizz through getting all hairs out.

If you can do one smile perfect you can do them all perfect!!

And remember: Practise does not make perfect .. only PERFECT practise makes perfect.

Thankyou so much for all your replies!!! I feel so much better after reading that im not the only one struggling! I've done a full set this evening and it took me 2 hours and I felt really good after i'd done them and my friend seemed genuinely chuffed with them! I kind of know in myself that it will all come with practice but I suppose i'm just being impatience!!!!!!
As for the gel, I think I might have touched tha nail after so thats why i'm getting these bumps the UV lamp is new as are the bulbs - I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again, will definately be investeing in those books and watching the tutorials.
Have a Happy New to all of you.:wink2:
