Good lighting for portfolio photos

I'm returning back to work properly soon and I have been extending my portfolio but I'm really struggling to get good lighting for before and after photos. I've tried my iPad pro, iPhone X and even used a professional camera but lighting is always rubbish.
Any ideas please?

What are you taking photos of? My daughter uses a free standing ring light to take photos of makeup but I use a small clip on selfie ring light on my phone for nail and lash pics.
