Hi girls,

Wondering if there are many out there that have managed to become reputable hair extension specialists without there actual NVQ hair qualification?

I am contemplating establishing myself offering la weave/ tapes but not sure how achievable it is without that certification.

I want to get all the proper insurances etc and just want to make sure I do everything according to the book x

I work for a hair and beauty wholesalers, I know a few non hairdressers that do it, but i do feel having proper hair cutting etc is defo going to be a bonus if you want to offer a full service, ive got my extensions qulification but still plan on enrolling at college to do a night course in hair dressing after my barber course has finished because some clients need their pre exsisting styles thinning out or extensions need to be blended properly etc the more knowledge the better i say, if your already confident in extensions but haven’t got certificates do a one or two day course just so you can get insured xx

I’ve been doing extensions for over 20 years and I didn’t have any hairdressing experience. I did get taught how to cut by a hairdresser friend though in exchange for her being my guinea pig and that advice has been invaluable. A lot less competition back in those days admittedly but I wouldn’t worry too much about certifications,a basic cutting course will be a huge help to your business though.

Thank you Hun, that was very lucky having someone that close in hairdressing industry. For sure would to do a cutting course, even though not hairdresser trained as such I’ve worked in salons here and there and do love anything hair. So fingers crossed it all works out for me. Can I ask is it just public liability insurance you got ? Is that easy enough to get ? Xx

Thank you babe for your advice, definitely would take a cutting course and a few different ones really so my portfolio builds up, slowly but surely hopefully.
Oh nice I thought about a barber course but it’s just not adorable right now.
I have done a hair extension course last year, but after I left I didn’t feel confident I’ve done my research now more though and will do it again just with a different trainer this time.
Thanks again xx

The trouble is with the extension courses there only one or two days in most cases and its alot to take in, you definitely have to go away and practice, practice, make mistakes and persevere! You tube is good for tutorials xx

@sarahpagehair on insta is good she does alot of close ups of her weaves etc x

I don't think it matters too much as you are shown within the hair extension course how to shape the hair using other tools rather thank scissors.. if not you can be lft with a finish the client is not happy with. Hope this helps x

See when i did my training they literally spent ten mins going over cutting the ends and sides, no blending etc

I got minimal training as well on the blending and cutting when I got my certification, but I've watched a lot of youtube videos. Im super careful about cutting and always ask the client how much they want me to trim and never cut their actual hair unless they have agreed upon it. It also depends on the extensions as well. Some are very thick at the end so you'd have to take the weight out for them to look natural.

We have many non-trade customers who are very successful in their field. I'm not too sure on insurance purposes though xx
