First of all, Hello (I'm new), and Secondly - I apologise in advance for all the questions I have!

I am going on holiday in June. I am looking to grow my hair but it will never be the length I want in time for my holiday! This is where I have decided to consider hair extensions. I currently have a long bob (shorter at back, longer at the front) with a fringe. Depending on whether or not my hair is long enough for extensions before June, I'm hoping to have extensions to get the hair style I am dying for! :)

Questions (sorry!):

The best type of extension fitting?
By this I mean bonding, weaving, gluing etc. What have you used / use etc.. and why?
I've read pro's and cons on all of these and I'm very worried that my hair will get damaged as a result of using extensions! Would also like to be able to tie my hair up without it being obvious that i have extensions in.

What is the best hair to have?
I've read about different types, from real hair like Racoon, to synthetic. What is the best option? I would like to be able to curl and style this hair as if it is my own.

How long (roughly) will they last?
I've read an average of six months, but i know this also depends on how well you look after them. Is this right?

How often can / should I wash them?
I tend to wash my hair every other day.. would this be possible?

Can I go swimming with them?
Random question i know, but would chlorine in a pool mess them up or something?!

How much should I expect to pay (roughly)?

and best places to go / people to see in Essex for extensions?
Can you reccomend anyone? :p

Okay, I'm finished, i think - sorry for so many questions, and i hope you can answer them

Thank you guys! x

Hi there . You raise some very good questions.
I will gladly help to my best ability to answer these questions without pointing to brand names.

What is the best hair to have?

This will depend on your natural hair type to start with.
The simple answer is to ask experienced hair extensionists that do extensions ever day for a living and not a part time on the side income.Major brands are usually a safer bet as the have back up or support if anything goes wrong and you get what you pay for.

What have you used / use etc.. and why?
I believe this forum has many hair exensionist specializing in fusion (bonding).
there are many types of way of attaching hair these days. i would simply say don't install anything you wouldn't put in your own hair lol.
if your hair id fine i certainly wouldn't be installing bonded hair extensions especially over long periods of time . in other words fine hair will fold first with a bonded system. but the bonded systems are still widely used and the glue is matched to your hair very nicely.

Micro rings are slowly gaining ground (Among long term hair extensionist) and can be moved around to ease stress especially on fine hair.

How long (roughly) will they last?
I've read an average of six months, but i know this also depends on how well you look after them. Is this right?

This also depends on your hair type.
EXAMPLE .. if you hair is thin (density) you will find that you have less hair over all and its not recommended to have the extensions in for a long time as the extension will run out of hair to hold onto (if bonded). if medium to thick hair bonding will be fine and can general go for longer periods of time.
the other element to combat is shedding.
The hair extension recommended time left in the hair will also depend on hair much hair you shed.
if you sheds a lot of hair you will find that you will need to rotate hair extension sooner rather than later.
The reason for this is because your extension will run out of hair to hold onto the stressing you own hair and causing stress Alphecia.Im sure that some of us have seen this.
To avoid this you need to rotate the extensions as you own hair rotates. This is a fine balance between hair exensionist and system and experience. = long term happy client.
There are hair extensions that can last 5 years but the question is how healthy is it to be in your hair and for how long?
and what will it cost to re do when Should you remove or replace them so its not damaging your hair or scalp?

How often can / should I wash them?
I tend to wash my hair every other day.. would this be possible?
You should be able to wash you extension as often as you wish but the is a correct way to wash them and a incorrect way to wash them.
can I go swimming with them?
Random question i know, but would chlorine in a pool mess them up or something?!

with extream care yes. but i would rather say not untill you become experienced and still i would stear you away from chlorine especially high level of chlorine.

How much should I expect to pay (roughly)?

This will depend on the system,. And the demographics of the salon or extensionist.

Summery
Try before you buy is what i say and ask questions.
how long do they last?
when should i get these extensions re placed ?
what happens to my hair or scalp if i go over this period of time?
what will i cost me to remove them?
how many times a year will i need replace them?
how much will it cost me to remove and replace them?
how long do i want them in for?
hope this helps

Hi bluefoundation, oh hun there are an awful lot of questions in there lol
do take a look at the links below

personally though ,
I would recommend you dont go for any cheap hair , go for pure virgin reusable hair ,
I use very small lightweight micro bonds on fine hair which is pre bonded
beat quality hair.

A head full of hair extensions is only as good as the hair used and the extensionist who does them.
also hair extensions need to be looked after and you will need to pay for maintenance in between wearing them (this is very important) to keep them looking good ,

Decent hair alone can start from about 200 pounds or more
which includes matching it up Vat and delivery all depending on what lengths and colour you choose
and of course what hair quality you go for

the method you decide upon , is something that you will have to research and decide what might be the best for you,
also make sure the person that does them is an experienced hair extensionist specialist
ask to see qualifications and make sure they are fully fully insured , ask to see photos of their work ,

the best recommendations are by word of mouth and by seeing someone elses hair , and waiting to see if it lasts well
and seeing how many installs they get out of it ,

it may cost you around £300 to £500 for a decent job but this is all depending on the hair chosen , and if the stylist is mobile or salon based .
Salon based are very reliable , but choose carefully and do all your research first, hth

here are some links :) minky

Hello there
You do have quite a few questions :) I'll will try and answer some of them for you.

With regards to the of extension fitting, there are quite a few on the market - which one you go for really depends on how long you would like to wear your extensions for and there are pro's and con's for most methods. I use hot fusion (bonding) both on myself and clients. Normally if these are applied and removed correctly (ie by someone who is trained) there should be little to no damage to your own hair and you should be able to tie your hair back without the bonds showing (again if they are applied correctly).

With regards to best hair to have, well again this will depend on how long you will be wearing it and what sort of heating products you intend to use after the install. I do think human hair is better for hair extensions, because its human it tends to blend into your own hair better plus you can curl and straigten it as much as you like. With most types of synthetic hair you cant using heat products plus it tends to look like dolls hair (ie way too shiny).

Most hair extensions should last on average 3 months (maybe longer depending on the system used and quality of the extension hair) if you have regular maintence checks and maintain them properly at home.

Washing your hair every other day should be fine (I wash mine every day and have no problems).

You can go swimming but you may want to tie your hair back so it doesnt get tangled. With regards to Chlorine, unfortunetly that can be damaging to hair with or without extensions depending on how long you are in there for.

Price wise I would expect to pay anything from £280 upwards for a full head of decent hair. I would shop around though and get quotes from salons in your area and mobile extensionists and, like someone else mentioned, ask to see pics of their work oh and dont be afraid to ask questions if there is anything your unsure of.
