I am hoping to convert a room in my house into a home salon in a few months time. I will only be offering nail services. Do you have to inform the council and get their position? Has anyone had any problems/issues with this? I don't want to ring the council until I have an idea of what they might ask me.

Yes, you have to ask your council for permission. Another thing worth mentioning is if you permanently change one of your rooms to salon use, you may be required to pay business rates for the area of that room

You may also have to advise your home contents and/or buildings insurers accordingly.

Everyc council is different. I rang to explain what I was doing and they weren't that interested, I had to register that I was doing electrolysis. A month after I started I had a boardv outside my house and the next thing I know the council were round, wanting to book an appointment, there had been a complaint that I had set up a business and changed the use of my house, (complete crap). So he came round and checked everything out, and was fine as the room I used I said that the kids sometimes used it and had a tv and dvd player in there that was the only time it was in there. The guy was relly nice but said that I needed lazy chair or something it there (never did). He said that really I only should do 4 people aday and have a one in, one out. It was something to do with planning permission, changing the use of my house, (it's only one room.) there is a fine line apparently.

As for business rates something to do with me working from home that I don't have to because I pay council tax.

The room I use I only use it for my beauty as to tell the truth I don't need it and it was only ever a junk room

House insurance has been a big problem, alot and I mean, alot won't insurance us, because I have more than 4 people in a month. The insurance I have at the moment is with lloyds, it is more expensive but the woman said that it covers for business use as long as I still have my beauty cover. I have no end if arguements with complanies over this, they see you as a high risk.

I love working from home, I started in September and everything is great, it was only really little hiccups to start with but got there in the end.

Thanks Kezza, some useful information you have given me. I guess if it's different with every council I will have to ring them and see what the response is, I just don't want to do anything to jeopardise my plans! I can't wait to get started with setting up my home salon
