Hi Everyone!!
My name's Rachel and I'm new to this site! I was wondering if anybody could help me, I'm looking for training on all aspects of manicures, acrylics, gels, etc but I just don't know where to go for my training? l live in Leeds, so I would prefer something here.
I've seen a few courses that seem worthwhile, but I'm also full time at college doing art, so I couldn't possibly do a full-time nail course! Plus there is the expense.. As I'm a student I can't afford to pay £500 for my training.... Any ideas... ?:irked::lol:

Thanks!!!

Hi and welcome, forgive me if i'm wrong but your post comes across to me like you want to know everything you can 'nails'....by investing as little time and money as possible?

Are you hoping to make a career out of nails? If so then you should be seriously thinking about how to get the BEST education...a cheap course that promises to teach you every system in one go is a waste of time and money...you need to concentrate on mastering ONE system before going onto the next.

If you are entitled to free or reduced education and money is an issue then probably the best place to look as a start to your education is probably at your local colleges.

If you are able to raise the funds then CND offer training in Leeds...a foundation course is over 5 days....this won't make you into a nail technician...it would be the start of your education within this industry...and yes it will cost you a fair bit over £500...good quality courses do not come cheap.

Hi Anna,
Firstly, can I just make it clear that that's not how I intended to come across and that isn't what I intend to do. I would obviously put in the time and effort, but I have other commitments. It isn't that I don't want to invest my time and, let's face it, scarse money, it's that I can't. I don't want everything for nothing, I want to know enough to set myself up from home/mobile, but as I explained.. it's hard when the only courses I can seem to find are ones for leisure @ £35, or pro one's @ £500+ and I wondered if there was any happy medium... :)

Thanks for you advice, I'm going to try and save for the CND course, because I've heard a lot of good reviews about this course... would you say that it was worthwhile..? I'm just worried that if I manage to pull up all that money and then get to the course and I don't learn anything, it will have been such a waste!

As long as you choose the right company to train with then you will have invested your money in yourself and not wasted it...cnd are one of the best...if not 'the' best.
I'm not sure who else is in your area but i'm sure there will be some...ezflow are also excellent and slightly less expensive, just google some good names...e-mail or call them and they will send you all the info.
cnd are 0845 210 6060 and ezflow are 0845 330 0840.

There are so many courses around...some may seem quite cheap..but don't be fooled by that...you may end up having to fork out again in the long run as for one thing...when it comes to getting insurance...the cheaper course you did...may not be recognised by an insurance company, and you need to be insured when working on clients!

The first course/the foundation is usually the most expensive...after that...the other courses that you can take etc are much cheaper...I think most of the techs on here will tell you that over the year they have probably spent thousands...which sounds a lot...but when you put into perspective...it's not alot really and it's well worth it.

Hey i bet you'll be great at nail art if your doing art at college!

p.s. while you are saving...start studying! that way you are bound to get much more out of the course as you will already understand alot of the terminology, systems etc etc
If you can afford it...buy a couple of good books..and start learning now...an absolute must is Doug Schoon's Nail Anatomy and Product Chemistry...if you are going to buy any book...buy that one! It's amazing.

Whoah, slow down a bit. I don't view the original thread as trying to learn everything for nothing. It looks like a simple request for a pointer in the right direction.

Just like your home learn course for nails, we all have to start somewhere XAnnaBannAx.

Hi Rachel and welcome. I am not familiar with the Leeds area but am sure you are already aware that the Creative Training Academy are based there. Have you contacted them to see if there are any payment options available to proceed with a course with them or what other options there might be available to you?

I do recommend that if you are going to invest money in training, that it is better to follow a reputable course which will give you good solid foundations for learning about nails and enhancements.

Well that is how I thought it came across so I replied accordingly...it has already been estabilished between rachel and I that I misinterpreted...thankyou....MRS CLOONEY

Rachey's thread never came across to me like that either Tracey....

Its not what you say its how you say it.

Welcome Rachey....There are many courses and yes the better (best) ones do cost more but what you get in comparison to the cheaper ones more than out ways the difference.

I would hate for you too pay out for a cheep course to then find that you didn't learn much and want a better course...resulting in paying out twice than was needed.

Here is a link to a thread that might help.... http://www.salongeek.com/training/2...hould-i-choose.html?highlight=answer+question

Best of luck hun x

Hi Tracey & AnnaBanana,

Thanks a lot for your advice guys. I'm going to do as you said Anna, get a few books and start practicing on myself whilst I save. I'm definitly going to ask CND about payment plans, because all the pro's are recommending it. I suppose that the initial fork-out will be an investment.. and as you say, if I'm going to put it to use I'l need a certificate/qualification and I should go with someone reputable to get insurance.
I just want to get as much out of my education as possible. It's obvious now that the best is probably the most expensive, but if it's worth it I'm willing to pay.
Oh and yes, it would be great to apply my Art skills into Nail Art skills ha!Thanks for your feedback guys xxxx appreciated!

Rach

Nevermind everyone! I didn't mean to kick up a fuss! Thank you all for your helpful advice! Thanks for the advice and the Link Bagpuss, I'll have a look!

be careful of practising on yourself before you 've received classroom training...i once gave myself greenies! and did a fair bit of damage to my own nails from practising on myself! lol ....another good investment....a nail trsiner hand....expensive to buy new...get a secondhand one if you get one.

Rachel, I personally don't recommend practicing on yourself until you have had training. Simply reading a book is not enough to teach you on yourself. Serious damage and painful damage can be done this way. By all means, start reading, but wait until you are in the classroom under correct supervision before beginning any practical work unless you invest in a nail trainer.

JMO but I think it's a sensible one. Good luck.

OOoo ok- no training on myself then! Point well taken, thank-you :D
Anna- would I find one of those training hands on e-bay?

Yes people are often selling them on there...try and get one thats got some click in nails with them.

grrrrrr...keep trying to edit my post then losing it...ill do a new one! lol i was just gonna add that they sell a different type of hand on ebay...as well as the nail trainer...the other hand is very cheap but is absolute rubbish and no good for practising enhancements on...so avoid that and make sure you get a proper nail trainer..you can prob get one for about 50 squids...or look on geek bay on here to see if anyone on here is selling one.
I agree with mrs. clooney be careful of practising enhancements on yourself..when i said buy a book and start learning now...I meant learning in a theoretical sense rather than practical...its' great preparation for a course because there is so much to learn...anatomy, chemistry, nail disorders/diseases and so much other stuff..the sooner you start reading the better! I have turned into a total bookworm lol

Ha yes, just been onto e-bay and saw the cheap rubber hands from Hong Kong, but thought better of it and made a bid for a Creative one. There are some starting really really cheap, so fingers crossed! One of them comes with a huge book about practically everything!
