Hi everyone!

Nice to meet you all...my name's Cerries and I live in North Wales.

I am currently training to be a Nail Tech - I have done a course in Acrylic extensions, and am doing a home learning diploma course.

I was just wondering if any of you lovely more experienced people out there have any tips for a newbie starting out in the field? I have an amazing opportunity of renting a beauty room in a new shop that has opened where I live, and even though I'm passable at doing acrylics I am not very experienced in this field!!!

Tips of all shapes and sizes are much appreciated (advice tips, not nail tips!!!)

Hi Cerries

I was looking at the home learn course you did and I see it is all theory with, for an extra fee, you get 2 days practical training in all 3 systems at the end. I'm afraid I disapprove of these courses when they try to convince you they are good enough to go straight out an get a job!

Being a nail tech involves a vast amount of practical skills that can only come from practice and practice on many, many clients and much of this under supervision and with constructive feedback.

I haven't heard of the accreditation organisation but I'm finding out about them so won't comment until I know the answers.

You are doing exactly the right thing by taking more courses in one system. I hope the one you have taken is a good one and had an excellent teacher.

However, renting a space is, in effect, your own business. In my opinion, with these 2 courses, you are a long way from being experienced enough to be able to start up and run a nail salon. It's a brand new salon so yiu won't even have the advantage of existing clients.

My advice would be to take a lot more courses, practice on many different people and may be get a job in an existing and successful salon for a while. Then maybe look at renting a space but only after research and careful business planning.

Probably not what you want to hear! Good luck
