Here's what I do:
every month I come up with some discount on the service. I am in Croatia, so numbers (prices) won't matter for you there, but for example: this May I'm running 'Are your toes ready for your sandals?', where I discounted french toes, then special price if they do pedicure+french toes, and pedicures for retired people.
And all throughout the year I have a full set discount for school and university girls. The discount for them is big, coz my full set costs ~ 35 (in croatian currency) and those girls I do for ~20 (no discount for rebalance, just for full sets).
I don't earn much from doing those, but they don't have much money and are happy to get their nails done, and they have a lot, lot of friends and mums and... so the word goes around. And they won't be in school/university forever
Also, I made a little free
gift cards and gave full sets, pedicures and french toes to some women in town (be sure to write an expiration date, exact service and name of the person). The ones in the bank, in the jewelry shop, busy clothes or some other shops... wherever they have women working for them and where other women can see their nails and you can get recomended. Or you can invite your customer's moms, aunts... with those free cards... quick pedicure or french toes don't cost you much material or time, you will greet your customer and gain a new one. Yes, I worked some things for free, but it returned with much more
Also, every 3 month I make a nice promotional e-mail and send it to about 500 people. And I always have some leaflets to leave around, or posters... and always giving away business cards, to everyone, every customer...
And for results: on 500 emails, 2 - 3 clients. Same for leaflets. Not much, you can say, but I'm gratefull for each new person. So the most effective thing for me are those nail discounts and gift-service cards. That works like crazy.
And the word from the happy client is still the best referrall...
