Rolling back the sidewall??

Have any of you ever heard of "rolling back the sidewall" on a manicure? I had a friend that is about to take their state test ask me about it. The directions say "avoid filing tops of nails while rolling back the sidewalls". I might have had a guess or two if it was talking about acrylics, but I'm stumped. Help?

Sounds like a bad choise of words , maybe the mean holding back the side walls ?
