Hi, can anyone offer any advice on scissor sharpening please. I got mine stuck in a barbicide jar, pulled them out & now they will only cut on the back of the blade. I can see a tiny notch about an inch from the tip. Will sharpening help & if so can anyone recommend a good one please? Thank you

It depends on the quality of the blades. Cheaper blades won’t stand up to being sharpened but a decent pair should be fine. This is the company I used and I posted mine to them from Ireland and they returned them very quickly. Maybe give them a call first, as I found them very helpful when I asked about posting from outside the U.K.

I did exactly the same thing just before lockdown, so I sent mine off during lockdown to Andy at extreme edge scissor sharpening and fair to say, they came back in great shape :)

A bit late on this thread but as a sharpener here's my two cents. All scissors can be sharpened and dents, nicks removed provided they are not too deep. Convex scissors should always be sent to specialists (you need a machine that costs £3000 plus training costs), and I have also heard good things about Andy at Extreme Edge in Wymondham.

Bevel edge scissors are more straightforward and you might find someone locally but never the mobile guy who does everything - shears, axes, knives, etc. Quality scissor sharpening is very complex and scissors can be over-sharpened and ruined so easily. Sometimes scissors will warp - the two curved blades cease to be aligned, and even if sharp they will not cut properly. Sometimes they can be bent back into shape but there is always a chance of breaking a blade when doing so.

What you can do is keep the scissors clean and oiled and tensioned. With tensioning hold one of the blades vertical. Then raise the other blade and let the handle drop. The scissor should stop at 11 o'clock and not close fully. If it closes tighten the tension (turn the tensioning screw clockwise). If it's at 10 o'clock or less loosen the tension. If the scissor stops at 11 o'clock and still isn't cutting properly time to send it off.
