Hiya,

Im planning on becoming self-employed but need some help from people who've been there and done it

(I spoke to BusinessLink and found them really un-helpful, they weren't interested in helping me at all )

So, I plan on working from home/mobile.

Do I need to open a business account with my bank so I keep all the money seperate and so I can keep track of incomings and outgoings?

With insurance, Im a little confused, with products like NSI, where you dont have to a certification with them to buy there products, so how do you go about insurance for them, for example - doing hollywood toes? Sorry if that makes no sense, I know what Im trying to say but cant get it out right :o

Im sure I'll come up with more questions soon, if theres anyone out there who is a self-employed working from home tech, I'd love to hear from you if you could help me.

Any advice would be much apprecaited :green:

hi!

id seriously advise you open a business account as its much easier to keep your books etc in order when you've got separate accounts as you will need to file an end of year return etc to the government.

I think you can check directly with the guild of nail techs or beauty therapists regarding insurance to make sure you are covered properly.

I always found the scottish version of business link very helpful
Starting a business from home | Business Link

good luck

Hiya hun,
I wouldn't advise a business account to start with I would just go to another bank and open another personal account with them. Saves you lots of money, as soon as you go into a bank and say you want to be a business customer they see pound signs and try and sell you allsorts! (in my experience anyway).

Make sure you get yourself registered with HM Revenue and customs to pay your National Inurance, You shouldn't get taxed untill you earn so much.

To keep track of your books I bought an accounts book from capital which helps alot! just keep all your reciepts in date order, and make note of how much clients pay you in your diary also, That helps me.

I found business link quite helpfull, book on some free courses with them, it helps you with business start up, How to win and keep customers, managing your money etc something I really needed!

As long as you are a qualified nail tech, and have all your certificates as long as you have insurance it doesnt matter which sytem you use as long as you follow the rules of your insurance so it isn't invalid if the worst happens!

I've been there done it all recently so if theres anything else you wanna know just message me :) Hope this helps!
Holly x
