Hi, I'm opening a salon soon and have two spare rooms. And was thinking of putting a sunbed in one. There are no shops in the area with sunbeds. I have found an ergoline for sale second hand in great condition etc. Just need some opinions really on whether to go for it and regulations etc

Thank you!

Hi

I'm not sure if 1 sunbed would be worthwhile. If you promote it well and it gets busy customers might not come back if they have to wait too long for the one bed. Personally I'd say it's all or nothing (2+ beds), but I don't have experience of having just one bed so some else may be able to help more.

With regards to regulations, we contacted our council before opening and they really weren't interested! They said as long as we follow the legal guidelines (over 18's only), there was no problem. We've still not seen anyone.

Do take advice from a good sunbed supplier (we use Cyrano - excellent advise etc.) as to how big the room needs to be and ventilation etc. for a sunbed. Also, are you aware of the specific electrics needed for sunbeds? Again, installing the electrics for one bed may mean it's just not worthwhile for you if it's only a small side line.

Best of luck :)

Thank you! Which insurance company do you use? X

Salon Gold. We didn't shop around much though - we will next time now we know more :)

You have to look at the type of salon you want to be, and how you want to be perceived. We specialise in skin care so wouldn't dream of having a sun bed as it sends a completely different message. Could you rent the room to someone offering something that you don't?
This way you would have a guaranteed income (so important when starting out) and no managing problems.

We have sunbeds amongst everything else. We are a one stop beauty shop kind of thing. I agree that having just one bed isn't going to work particularly well. Often people come in pairs or threes and won't want to wait.

Look into the up keep and costs- big electrical equipment is expensive to maintain, run and fix if broken. The elec bills will go up, re tubing is expensive, servicing, issues to get an engineer out etc etc. There's a lot of costs involved, yes done correctly it can be very profitable but look into it properly first.

Thank you! Such a hard choice lots of pros and cons x
