When do you do your Tax Return?

Thanks everyone. I like the idea of getting it in early then saving up for the tax bill! As long as it doesn't have to be paid until January I will do this :) I've always started it and panicked and then submitted it in Jan....hoping to be on the ball this year and do it tomorrow lunchtime when I've got some time to concentrate while my mum does me lunch ;) lol

Luckily I've not had to pay anything so far but think I might have to this year, don't really know how to work it out as I'm close to the personal allowance threshold so would most likely pay a sum for next year. I like how it's a round 10k for this tax year, much easier to work out and remember x

I run a firm specialising in tax returns for people & businesses in the beauty industry & I always start nagging my clients to send me their info ASAP after the tax year finishes so that I can calculate their tax position early.

If you are due a tax refund, you'll get the money now rather than if you leave it until last minute in January (plus HMRC are much quieter at this time of the year so repayments are issued within a week or two, whereas in January they can take between 4 and 6 weeks).

If you have tax to pay, the deadline isn't until January (regardless of when you submit your tax return) so this gives you much longer to budget for the amount that you will have to pay over to HMRC.

If anyone needs any help or info regarding tax, please let me know as I'm happy to help!

Usually around May I do mine, I have to wait for the school (part time job) to give me thier bit before I submit it, but I enter a months accounts at a time over the year to keep ontop of it.

In this tax year I have worked both as an enployee and self employed and according to my records I will be due a rebate. I am starting my tax return now for this reason but can I initiate a rebate or do I have to wait for the tax office to do it? I tried googling and went round in circles. My rebates I have had previously, a few years ago were from about 5 tax years before!! Times are v hard so the 1.5- 2k I have estimated that I am owed from the last 2 years would be very handy!!

I absolutely and certainly don't want to do mine online. Do I need to request a form to fill in by hand.

I knew someone would ask!

I'd rather do it by hand so that I can check it multiple times away from being sat at a screen and I want the scope to be able to include handwritten notes if necessary to ensure I communicate important information effectively and accurately.

Nobody can convince me otherwise lol.

I know that you wont be convinced but there is a section to add any notes, which I have done to explain things. You can also save it and keep going back and looking at the summary. You can also print off the summary. Not saying you should or shouldn't do it online just that the stuff you want to do is possible when doing it online.

I'm so confused, I have been self employed since this time last year and have just told them I'm not self employed now more! Not sure what to do as I actualy worked for a company, who's building, clients and everything was theirs.. I just did the treatments and got paid a hourly rate only if I had clients booked in.. Do I have to just add my my wages from this job? And do I include other jobs I am employed in? Also I am still in education!
Someone help! X

You must include all jobs you're paid for.
If you were self employed, why were you being paid an hourly rate? X

Hi Zoe

I run a firm which specialises in tax returns and accountancy for the beauty industry so would be able to help you.

Do you want to message me with the details?

If you were an employee, your employer should have deducted tax from your earnings through PAYE.

If this didnt happen, I would be careful about saying you were employed rather than self employed because HMRC will want to know why they didn't receive any PAYE from your earnings, as well as the correct classes of national insurance (this applies to the company as well).

My boss told me I would have to declare I'm self employed which I have done! I dont earn much so I had to tell them I don't think I earn enough for national insurance.. I had to write what treatments I had done in a month then she would pay me! I got paid 8 per hour but only as long as I was doing a treatment.. I wouldn't get paid otherwise! I'm so confused x

Do you have a contract of services? This is their way I'd getting away from paying properly. Would be best to speak to someone in the know x

Also, be careful about not paying NI, it can affect your pension and certain benefits if you ever need them. You might want to consider making voluntary contributions instead. If you get child benefit your pension is protected though. X
