That's is something I want to do in the future, instead of buying luxuries with the money I earn I want to rent out. I know I have alot of things I am aiming to achieve at the age of 19 (still got a long way) but I am so fascinated by business & investing in houses. I think for me, I do like money but I am not really the person that is greedy to be wanting more money. I think I just thrive the success. The reason I am like this is because 1. I want to live a comfortable live money-wise and 2. My family, in particularly my cousins have put me done for leaving school at 15... They're all studying Medical sciences, Law, oral care and all of that boring stuff (well to me). They've put me down so much and constantly compete with me. Don't get me wrong, I am not competing with them but I think I am trying to prove a point to myself that finishing school and getting uni degrees is not the only way to get where you want to be in life and most importantly it is not the only way to be successful :)

Hi Elaine,

I almost regret going to uni, I had a great time and all that but it wasn't necessary! I should of done beauty and built myself up from the start but I was laughed at by everyone around me and told to stop being so ridiculous and to get my ass to university!

I now know loads of people who went to uni with me who struggled to even get work when they qualified! I went to uni 12 years ago, it was a time we were all heavily pushed by the government to go regardless of our abilities. You could get a degree in all sorts of nonsense Mickey Mouse courses- cocktail making, bird watching, you name it! We had money thrust upon us and are now all left owing huge amounts to the government! Now, because there are so many of us with degrees it's hard to find actual jobs.

Don't get me wrong, I really respect those highly trained in medicine and sciences etc but I also respect those who are successful through graft, hard work business acumen and determination.

I think I'm the same as you, in that I like money and nice things but I'm not driven solely by it, I'm driven by success as well. I do love the idea of building, running my own successful business even if it's in a small scale. I want to build it in this industry though rather than outside it as some have done! I want to be one of those few virtues talks about who make quite a decent wage from beauty!

What businesses are they that you are starting? ...I've spent just under twenty thousand on two machines for my hobby, it is a very expensive hobby! ha ha

I'm obviously in beauty (which I wanna grow in few years, there will be opportunity) but we start fishing shops for hubby - one in real and the other one on-line and next year I wanna start fishing holidays (not much effort but really good money with this one) - we moved to Scandinavia and those things are extremely expensive here comparing to UK or Europe. But I'm sure I'll think of some more, there's lots of room on the market :)

I've had several businesses but only two now. Five years ago I started a food manufacturing business with a friend. We started in the kitchen and ended up in 1000sq ft unit. We sold it in May of last year to one of our European distributors. However we also used to do one catering event a year and our European partner wasn't interested in buying that so I kept it. It's a catering chalet at Winchester Christmas Market - we sell hot food such as chill, curry and soup all homemade by a local farms hop for me. Also do coffee and homemade cakes. It's a long hard slog 32 days plus set up but I love it.

After selling the other business I decided to retrain in beauty and nails as it was something I wanted to do when I left school but never got round to. I work from home still around school pick ups etc I don't think I could work for someone else now.

I've trained in shellac but am also doing a few other courses starting this week. Interestingly similar to Virtues I'm looking at Caci eventually. I'd like to try it first and just realised you are only about 8 miles from me Virtues - maybe I could come and have some treatments. I'm doing a facial course this week and waxing next week and will then decide whether to specialise in a couple of things or do more general beauty.

Still have to figure out how to run Christmas market next year and busiest time for beauty business but I'll get there!

Absolutely. Would love you to come to see me I can explain all about CACI and show you how the machine works and give you some complimentary treatments. :)

I only have one house that I rent out and a flat which is above my salon. With the interest rate being very low I receive a little income once the mortgage had been paid, but like most things it will eventually fluctuate and when it does increase it probably won't be worth doing. Different if you have a mortgage free property. I was lucky with my mortgage the term finished just as the interest rate plummeted. If it didn't I would probably have to pay more than I would receive.

I would like to deal in land (not greenbelt) as well as property.

Hi hazel :)
Everything you've said is so right!!
I'd rather be into hair and beauty & make my own money, work hours that I feel like it and have a passion for it.
Not saying that I would to get out of it but having something on the side will be amazing.
I don't have any degrees and only got up to year 9 but i feel like my job isn't so blunt and boring.
I'm trying to get there slowly. I would love to make a decent wage from beauty.
I'm still getting there so hopefully you and I make it ;)

You and Hazeleyes will both be fine, you both have a passion for what you do which is half of the way there. Any investment is a risk. You have to start off small and learn from your mistakes. We have all made them. Even the richest successful businessmen make bad business decisions occasionally...but what you will find is they take calculated risk with other peoples money rather than their own, this is very common. Money makes money, if you are not prepared to borrow money/credit you can not easily grow and it will take forever. I was always told if you can't afford to lose it then don't do it and through the years I have lost money through bad decisions but I've learnt from it, and very quickly. I'm sure 85% of geeks in this industry understand it better than I, but the principles of business remain the same. Success brings financial reward, naturally. x

Thanks Virtues! I have looked at your website and will give you a call in next week or so to arrange to come over. I'm sure your advice will be invaluable!

This is a really interesting topic to me. My husband has no formal qualifications and spent years dabbling in his hobby. I did the whole formal education and was in an employed senior management role . I used my salary to support him in launching his company and making it the success it is today. Anybody watching Splash on ITV last night would have heard him as the voice guy! Coincidently this company is starting to grow good passive income streams at the moment. Then last year when I was made redundant I retrained and opened my own high street salon which is coming along nicely.

I find our blend of skills complement each other well and one day hubby is jetting off to Brazil with the England team and the next he's sat on reception at the salon or helping to run our various social media. I try to keep the reigns on the legals and admin side of things for both companies as well as being a full time therapist.

Their are risks in everything, at the moment we own one small house which we have let out and rent our main home simply because we're not able to secure a mortgage yet and we needed more room and office space. I hope we can expand into more properties in a few years. I have my eye on buying my salon building and the flat above but this will have to wait until the bank are willing to grant us a mortgage.

I've always been risk adverse but hubby has shown me it can be worthwhile and whilst he could potentially go a step too far he's happy for me to reign things in and make sure it's well calculated.

Ps virtues completely get the whole working 24/7 and we always have a suitcase full of electronics and wifi is a must on any holiday

Fantastic Glittery. I love stories like this, you must be proud. I am proud for you just by reading your post. I hope everything works out for you both. Don't worry so much about the house issue, the one I am in is only rented even though I rent out my own! (it wasn't big enough). I would like to move into the new forest this year so just waiting on a suitable property....I have a facination with a cattle grid at the entrance and big electric gates.

I started my first business at 17 doing food at my dad's football club. I was so busy the first week that I employed my sister the next week to help me cook burgers as I couldn't do it quick enough! We ended up deep frying them (grim) but knocked out tons to hungry footballers!

Fast forward to failed A-levels and sacking from varying jobs and I worked in the city on the money markets for a few years, then moved to Devon and opened a recruitment agency (no experience, total blag) at 25yrs old. 2 years later opened another in Cornwall, started managing a psychic readings company as I sub-let part of my office to them and then started an online company selling handmade corsets and high end sex toys! Sold the recruitment firm but was retained for a year, split from ex-hubby, sold the corset firm (blagged a good price for that as well) then decided to retrain in beauty. The thought of being employed never entered my noggin ( I would be fired in a week) so went mobile and now rent a room.

In between times, built a house, sold a plot, bought a flat to live in and one to rent out and also have an online recruitment firm that I'm in the process of selling to my biz partner.

Now trying to think of something else to get on with as beauty isn't quite enough....

I feel I've blagged my way through a lot of it and am happy to work my arse off but also take risks. I consider myself lucky in many ways but my own worst enemy in others!

Wow some great stories and very busy ladies xx

I have a hair salon and I also sell glitter wine glasses glitterglasses.co.uk which does keep me busy esp at Christmas. But my best job is being mum of 3 <3 xx

"But my best job is being mum of 3".... But if it doesn't pay financially forget it... ha ha (only teasing, I'm sure you are a great mum). I will have a look at your website. Sounds interesting.

That's the one job I'd love! But being parents is eluding us at the moment!

Hi Everyone, I have really enjoyed your stories.

Here is mine so far....

When I was 11yrs my family relocated to Rural South West France. I never done very well at school and failed most of my exams due to the language barrier and 4 years later, I applied to go to beauty school. There were 150 people that applied for 3- places and I was not accepted. I was devasted but did not let it stop me so age 15 I flew back to England for a week and completed a 'Le Chat' Nail course. I started doing nails from home and had a few clients.

For Various reasons in 2009 age 16 we moved back to England and I studied beauty, Make-up and Complementary therapies for 3 years. During this time(2009-2010) I started up an Ebay shop selling clothes that I imported for Korea and also clip in hair extensions that I imported for China. I also worked various jobs in salons, restaurants etc.
I saved up some money during this time.

Age 17/18 still while still studying I decided to give up my ebay shops and launch my business as a freelance make-up artist specialising in Weddings. I soon became busy and after a year after finishing all my courses I opened a small Beauty Salon in June 2012 aged 19 (with all the money I Saved) so brides could come to me for trials and we could offer beauty treatments too! The salon became busy extremely quickly! So, I then opened a hair salon ( I am not a hairdresser) in December 2012 down the same road. Both salons have exceeded my expectations and I now have a team of 13!

This year I have big plans too!

They have to be calculated risk though BBS - Blagging doesn't usually work for too long, you eventually get caught out. I enjoy learning, knowledge is power, otherwise everything ends up being more luck than judgement.

I blagged through my CV to employers I must admit - I did tell them I have far more qualifications with top grades than I had which was none! Somehow I could live up to it so never got found out. :)

That sounds really fab, do you have a network of support behind you to achieve this? Does your age go against you in certain areas? :)

I'm now working on a career as a makeup artist with some beauty treatments I do from home as well as working on a passive income and in the future I want to home a property portfolio as well :)

My mother was fuming when I ran off to America after my now husband.
I was 18 and was just after starting uni to study French & German with a view to becoming a translator / interpreter .

She was delighted that 1 of her 9 children was finally going to uni to get a degree which in her eyes was going to be the a massive achievement which of course it is ...if that's what you want.

I was young and in love ...still am ....haha .

Still No degree but I did ok ..

I sometimes tell my kids their dad could have been a Pierre and we could be living in an apartment overlooking the seine.

They already think I'm a bit nuts so just go ....yeah, mam , whatever.

Well hubby tells them their mother could have been steffi graff ...they believed him for years that he went out with her.
Lol.
