Hi I am soon going to start doing wefted hair extensions in salon. I have been taught by one of the best hair extension person that specialises in wefted hair extensions in south Yorkshire. I'm a qualified level 3 hairdresser and have been hairdressing 6 years and looking to expand by doing hair wefts, I just need advise on the legal side of things please.. Do I have to have a certificate and be properly qualified to do hair extensions? Help please!

Can I just add that my insurance also covers for extensions..

I am not a hairdresser by trade but would say it is always worth training to offer a specific service. I am planning on training in extensions next month and then once I pass my driving test, amgoing to try to get a place in college for haridressing ( I don't want to be a hairdresser but feel it will give me better structure as an extensionist to fully understand the trade itself ) xx

Yeh thanks, I understand that it's just £££ for the course I can't afford at the min but I know how to do them, I've been shown/trained by one of the best & have an account set up with a hair extension company to get their hair. I just don't have a certificate to say so as the person who trained me isn't a training company so I'm just a bit confused as to legally if I'm 'allowed' to do them without a certificate on the wall saying I'm qualified. Hmmmm x

Hi Biba,

No, in the UK, no-one is legally required to hold specific qualifications to offer hair extensions.

However, the fact that your insurance company is happy to cover you without you having undertaken a specialist course should be adequate. You are a qualified hairdresser to level three after all, and this is a lot more training than some people have who are currently offering hair extensions. (!)

...But obviously I'm not referring to those Geeks who read these forums and are passionate about doing a great job ;-)

Why can the hair industry get away with letting this happen yet if someone performed a beauty treatment without a qualification all hell would let loose?? I'm confused with this!

to gain insurance you WILL need a certificate from a recognised training provider to say you have attended and achieved a level of competence even though there is no current qualification - sorry but you'll probably find you have to spend the £££'s!!

Thanks bingle that's helpful and cleared things up for me :) x

I already have insurance covering me for all hairdressing and extensions, I didn't have to send my hairdressing qualifications to gain this x

You may think you have insurance to cover everything but if you wished to claim against said insurance you would be expected to provide cerification that you are trained and competant to provide the service in question. THAT'S when you would be required to produce your certificates.

Insurance companies love to use the slightest glitch not to pay out!!! Not being trained is a perfect excuse!

Yeh Luce thats true x

that's what I was meaning - you do need to hold the right certificate and be able to produce it for your insurance to be valid!!

It's probably best not to make generalisations as it depend on the terms of the insurance cover. They do vary and that's why it's important to read the small print, even though most of don't bother. Me included...
One way to be certain would be to write to them and ask for clarification. If they write back confirming that you are definitely covered by having a level 3 hairdressing qualification, then they can't rescind their statement following a claim. However, still be wary as they could subsequently amend the terms of the cover, say, when you renew it.
Finally, if you do have problems following a claim, do pursue it.
Lucelasticx is right in that they sometimes try to wriggle out of paying but I'd advise, don't necessarily accept their decision.
My insurance co. tried not to pay me following a house fire (caused by a faultily serviced appliance!) but after about nine months of hassle, they paid up in full. Plus I got a new appliance from the manufacturers after complaining to them that the service agent I used was on their list of recommended engineers.
The fire wasn't too bad but we had no heating from January until September. Brr!
