Hi,
I will do my best not to make this post into an essay! I will try and give as much info as possible as I really need help.
I have strong natural nails which I take care of as best I can without any training on nail care. I keep them quite long, painted them French style since the '90's, always use top and base coat and cuticle oil most days. If anything they are brittle nails rather than flaking or splitting.
I have had the occasional manicure over the years but never liked the end result and not enjoyed having my nails “sawed” until a recent holiday when, having forgotten to pack my varnish remover, I had a fantastic enforced manicure. I now want to have my nails done every few weeks!
The nail professional used an acrylic overlay on my nails, she said that would make my nails harder, repair one that had a wee break and ensure the French stayed white and lasted longer. All I know is that she used a ‘dip system’ in a pink and white mix. It is very thin and does not show even though it is growing out although there is possibly a hairline crack on two of my nails [I guess this could be in the polish – not sure] I have no idea if she used a safe acrylic or not although I did ask and she said it was fine.
The smile lines were so crisp they were a joy to look at and the manicure lasted over 2 weeks and didn’t yellow like mine does after a few days, which is good going as I look after 5 stables as part of my day [gloved up of course!].
I would like to continue to have my nails done this way and need to know what type of salon product to look for and what to avoid. Also if there is any specific qualification I should expect my nail professional to have. I have read that backscratchers is good, but apart from that I am not sure what is the best thing to do. I have searched this site for nearly a week and have no idea what to do for the best.
Thank you.

i think the best product as a natural nail overlay varies with each client.
i offer l/p acrylic, gel and soak off gel.
on a longer nail i find great results with the soak off gel. but results do vary according to the clients lifestyle.

can you remember the brand name of the product your tech used, various brands have a 'dip' system including backscratchers.

with regard to qualification, this also varies.
some nail techs are educated at college and some privately. standards of both can vary. a good technician will continue their education throught their career.

Hiya ... It does sound like a dip system like backscratchers.

How did you remove it...?? just asking cos it might help to find out what it was.

Thank so much for your interest.
The pot she used was blank and she wouldnot tell me the name just that it was called a dip system and was a mix of the pink and white powder which she mixed herself. I haven't taken them off I was told to either get them filled or let them grow out.
She also gave me cuticle eraser and solar oil - both lovely products.
I just don't want to go wrong with where i entrust my nails so thanks again for your advice.

I was told to only use acetone free polish remover. Also that she would supply me with the product for DIY but I wasn't happy to do this as:
I wouldn't know what I was using [it was an unbranded pot]
I was nervous as i'm not trained to recognise problems etc

sorry i meant knowing how it removed would help US find out what it was...

so did she do the whites using the dipping method too...?

No the tip was done with a white polish which she over did it then made the smile line with a cuticle stick which she dipped in remover. She didn't use any other colour on the whole nail just a top coat.
