Hi all, I've recently done my nail tech course for UV Gels, Acrylic, Silk and Fibreglass usingSalon Sysytems. I removed my own set last night and it took me 2 and a half hours! (I'm shattered this morning!).

Here's what I did (please correct me if I've done something wrong):

1. I filed down gels with a 100 grit, then moved to a 180.
2. Soaked acetone on cotton wool, wrapped up my pinkies and covered each one in tin foil. Left for 30 mins and was hoping the residue would be soft eough to hoof away when the foils removed - uh oh, wrong! The residue seemed to go hard and it was difficult to remove.

so…

3. I tried soaking in the finger dishes with acetone for 5 mins, this still didn't work so did another 15 mins with the foils.
4. Then I buffed away the residue.

The gel wasn't on thick (I was quite impressed how even they were for a first timer on my own hands!) and the acetone was the Salon System range.

I'm not sure if acetone comes in different strengths and what is the best one to use? Obviously I don't want to be taking over 2 hours for a set of removals each time! Any product recommendations please?

Also, could anyone advise me on the best technique for removal (ie. the foil fingers, acetone 'bath', or I have seen some rubber thingies that go on finger tips) Any help is appreciated!

Thanks :)

Sounds like you were using a hard gel my darling. Hard gels will not come off with acetone, they must be buffed off using a finer and finer grit as you go along until the are completely removed.

Soft gels are the ones that will come off with the acetone and cotton wool method you used. You need to contact your educator and ask them again as to the method of removal for each gel. I am not familiar with this brand so am not sure if they do a soft gel. Sorry I can't help you any more than this. :) xxx

Ahh thanks for that advise! The gel system I'm using is Salon System as this is what we were trained in. Have just emailed my educator to find out if it is a soft or hard gel. From what you've said, I'm thinking hard! thanks again! :)

Also, something to remember if you do use acrylic or soak of gels, put the bowl of acetone within a larger bowl with warm water in. It speeds up the process no end! hth xxx

Really? That's a lovely little secret to pass on, thanks Kate! Will bare that in mind! :)

I think it's terrible that you havn't had removal coverd in your training ( no reflection on you but on your educator )
I would get back to them and ask for the various methods of removal, especially if your choosing to carry on using this brand.

Hi Del, we did a removal of one nail during our week course. On the course we applied a couple of nails as acrylic, gel, silk and fibreglass, but because of timescales, we took the rest of at home - this took me 2 hours again, but I thought it was coz it was my first time!

I'm hoping my educator will get back to me as soon as poss, coz I need to feel confident in offering a service and knowing all of the procedures for application, infilling and removals.
