Allergies

Prompted by the Chinese cooking thread, I just wanted to know if there are any others who have or a family member has allergies to food types. Also do you think people with allergies are catered for adequately by places like restaruants and take away's?

Both my twin :hug: daughters are allergic to nuts and eggs, which causes a lot of problems with buying food. We no longer shop in Asda as everything that is 'shops own' has the disclaimer about nut traces. So means having to pay for the branded items, which are naturally more expensive.

I can't eat anything that has eggs in! So thats cakes out of the question for me! Its really hard as whatever I buy in the supermarkets I always have to read the ingredients. There are alot of things I have to miss out on but I have actually got use to it now though so its not too bad! Although there is a day when I think oh I would just love to have a bite of a chocolate cake! lol

It's not something I would have thought about before, but its annoying and amazing at times how many things people can't have who are allergic to eggs. Cakes, some types of breads (croissant, bagels), batter/breaded (chip shops) or even pies that have been brushed with eggs.

On the cake matter, something I came up with for my daughters was that a Scone has no eggs in it. So for a chocolate cake just add some drinking chocolate powder for some of the flour, I'd say 100g to the 125g of SR flour in the recipe. Bake it in a cake tin rather then small individual scones, this will let you make a two layer cake filled with cream <yum>.

i am not allergic to any specific foods, but i have to keep away from foods that contain iodine and alot of products which contain salt it makes my graves really bad.
iodine is in my favourite foods chines and seafood so i have to be carefull...the posotives is it makes my body go into overdrive and i can scrub the house top to bottome in an hour flat...pmsl.
luckily i am not allergic to anything which would cause anphalaxis , that must be very scary for peeps who are

Just thought I would add something else, for those allergic to eggs there is a company called Granovita who make an egg & dairy free mayonnaise. I get mine from Asda in the gluten free sections, but I have seen it in Safeway (before the Morrisons take over) as well.

For those suffering from nut allergies, check out Kinnerton who have seen the plight of allergy suffers and have literally split their factory in two. One side deals with nuts the other doesn't and never the twain shall meet.

My family are a nightmare, Im severly allergic to all nuts, latex, penecillian and bee stings, and carry adrenaline as I go into anaphylatic shock if I eat or touch these foods, My youngest son allergis to peanuts, sesame seed, kiwi, tomatoes, and also carries an epipen and my youngest is allergic to cows milk and is lactose intollerent. We have to buy specialist foods, there are several online companys that sell allergy-friendly foods. It annoys me that they are so much dearer though!! Eating out in a resturant is near impossible, we have to get a list of all ingredients so we know what to order in advance! Im a memeber of the Anaphylaxis campaign, they have a website, and there is loads of info on there for anyone who suffers severe allergies.

You have my sympathies Garfield and I agree it is a nightmare even with just egg or nut allergies, I think your family would test even my cooking skills to the limits.

What gets me is that supermarkets seem to cater more for the gluten free or (Atkins) carb people then they do for any other conditions. Though it is getting a little better, it is still not to a level that is beneficial to those who suffer it.
