A new study undertaken by scientists at the University of Copenhagen has suggested that sunbathing may, in fact, have serious health benefits. While this may be true, doctors are warning that over exposure to UV rays does still cause skin cancer.

The study analysed the health records of the entire population of Denmark who are over forty and found that those who had been diagnosed with non-melanome skin cancer were 4% less likely to suffer a heart attack and early death than the others.

While this may be true, it's unlikely that this outweighs the risk posed by skin cancer caused by over-exposure to the sun and doctors agree. "Over-exposure to UV rays from the sun or sun beds is the main cause of skin cancer," explains Dr. Claire Knight from Cancer Research UK. "We all need some sun in our lives to make Vitamin D, which is crucial for healthy bones, but the key is to enjoy the sun safely and avoid sunburn."

Of course, those responsible for the study also conceded those diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer could naturally have led a healthier, more outdoor-based life and thus be at less risk from heart disease anyway.

So all in all, not much new.

Until then...geek on!
