Hi! I'm 22 and I've been dying my hair since I was 13, it's naturally a light brown if that's relevant! I've been blonde before and dyed it all at home, but this time around I had trouble getting the shade right and relied on a hairdresser to dye it the 4/5 times since I went blonde earlier in the year. She used to do the roots and then use a toner. Unfortunately she wanted to put the price up by £20 and as a student that's not something I could afford.

So I decided to dye my hair at home like I've always done. To my roots I applied nice n easy natural light ash blonde (I've always used an ash or else it comes out quite yellowy). Didn't blow dry it, just let it dry naturally up in a bun. (This is possibly what caused it ... maybe if I hadn't rinsed enough?). Seemed fine this morning and I put it up in a bun and stupidly went to the lido near me so 30 degree heat and an outdoor, very salty pool. I had my hair up in a bun but it inevitably got splashed by annoying little kiddies. The top part of my bun did get wet, so I think that must have caused this colour. I came home and found my hair like this. As you can see, it’s only really the top strands.

These pics were in the daytime, to accurately show the colour:

Blurry, but it shows you where it is:

This pic taken just now shows where it is on my hair too - sorry it's such a bad picture but the lighting isn't great at 1.30am! Excuse the hair kinks too

Just drew on some lines for you, it's within those black lines. Definitely must have been because I had my hair up. Argh.
Now, I'm stumped as to what to do. I've been googling all evening and I've heard from using head and shoulders to ketchup to lemon with conditioner. I'm also happy to dye it again - my hair is very strong and I'm not planning on going anywhere important for a week or so so I don't mind some funny colours in between.

What would be the best course of action? Any of those 'home remedies', or dying? Is it something where the grey is covering the blonde, or that the grey has stripped the blonde out? Do I need to try and get the grey tones out, or add the blonde tones back? I have bought 2 boxes of nice n easy natural extra light beige blonde (97) as they say they cover greys and it's a bit of a darker colour - although I can obviously take these back if they're not suitable. I don't mind going a slightly darker blonde in order to help cover it, but I very much like my very light blonde.

Unfortunately visiting a salon for anything other than advice is impossible at the moment - I've been off uni ill since March and so I have had no income since then. I'm literally scraping the pennies.

Sorry to be such a pain just joining for this advice, and sorry for being the annoying person that comes onto a specialist forum but insists on doing it DIY instead of a professional... Believe me if I had any money I'd be straight down to a salon.

Thank you very much for any advice. Sorry it's such a long thread.

Oh I should probably add that after I washed all the dye off, I put on my purple toning shampoo for about 4/5 minutes as I usually do once a month. Maybe that's helped to cause the problem?
