Brunette re-growth issue

I am popping over from Nail side and wonder if anyone could advise.

I went brunette after 20-25 years of being blonde and loved it. I still had a full head of blonde highlights with 2/3 inches of regrowth when I got it changed to brunette so the top 3-4 inches of my hair now is slightly darker than the ends and I have slight root regrowth now. I don't want to go back as dark as it was when I changed to brunette again so how would I get the darker parts and roots to the same colour as the ends!

Thanks for the reply that is what I was planning on doing as I never colour my own hair myself but I was actually looking for a more in depth explanation!
