Hi All, wondering if any make up specialists can help me. (Don't beat me up, this is a personal request)

My daughter has a large birthmark at the front of her arm pit. It's the sort of coffee coloured kind, not the strawberry. Now I don't see a problem with it, it's part of her, but she hates it, especially when summer comes around and she likes to wear little vest tops etc. She has very pale skin which makes it even more pronounced.

Does anyone know of any good cosmetic that will cover it, and preferably not rub off onto clothes.

Hoping someone can help, many thanks, jmel x

Hi,

There are quite a few different ones these days, but I use Veil which is available from ellisons. You can but it from boots (or something similar) too.

The good thing about Ellisons is they do a little pallett of various colours so you can check what colour would work best first. You then need to buy the finishing powder to set it, which makes it waterproof.

I wouldnt ever state its flawless, if you looked closely you would be able to tell, because its not on the face where people may expect to see make up. I cover my tattoo from time to time and this requires lot of work as its black and I apply green first to give a base for the natural foundation. Then I set it with the powder but I still have a powdery like finish to my arm.

I am sure your daughter will forget about it as she gets older, shes just going through a period of her life where perfection is everything. As she gets older and realises no one is without there flaws (thats what makes us anyway), she will learn to live with it.

It it bothers her a lot have you considered laser surgery? She may be able to get it on the NHS worth a try. Then if theres a waiting list she will be on it, no doubt by the time she gets seen she will be happy to keep it lol!

Thanks for your reply.

I'm sure she will get used to it also. It's hard though being a teenager isn't it. I have one on my thigh that I don't even notice anymore but I remember thinking I would never ever get a boyfriend or get married because of it. How stupid!!

I will look for that and give it a try thank you. I've got the beauty express catalogue at home, it may be in that one, I'll have a look this evening.

I'm not sure how laser surgery would work, her friend had a huge strawberry one on her neck which she got lasered but I've heard that lasering doesn't work as well on the coffee coloured ones. Anyone know if that's correct?

Thanks again, jmel

I think with laser theres no guarantee. Everyone reacts differently. I would speak to the Doc first or go to a clinic that specialise in pigmentation, birthmarks and skin resurfacing. They would be more likely to tell you the likely outcome, which at the very least would lighten or reduce its appearence.

I bet shes an absolute stunner as well isnt she lol? I have nieces that are so beautiful ones 16 and ones 18 and there so hung up on little things. I just tell them to enjoy their looks while they have them. She probably sees this mark as an ugly thing in the mirror whereas others probably don't even notice it, or if they do think its an endearing feature of her.

I hope she learns to live with it, well she will when like some of us we wish we appreciated what we had back in the day before droopage lol!

I had so many hang ups (which result in body dysmorphia which I still have) I just wish now I let it all go.

Your doing the right thing letting her cover it up, then she can enjoy the next few years before she realises that she no longer cares what people thing. I believe birthmarks are a sign from our past lifes, so when people ask about mine (not that noticiable little pyramid shape on my thigh) I tell then I used to be an egyptian (which when I was regressed I was). People now go ooooooohhh! Interesting lol!

Hope you find the stuff ok.

Well I think she's an absolute stunner! (but then it's my job to say that!) if you go to www.durhamphotographics.co.uk and click on portfolios and then children then you will see her! I hope that link is allowed. It's not my website i'm trying promote or anything, just a local photographer she did a bit of work for.

I don't think we'll go down the laser route, I don't feel it's necessary, in fact I kind of like it, it makes her unique. Yesterday she put on her new pageant dress and I thought it looked great, sort of perfect and yet imperfect. Oh God that sounds terrible I'll shut up now.

I have found the veil stuff in beauty express and there are a few other bits I was wanting to order so will be doing that tomorrow morning.

Thanks for all your help

Hi

I have a large port wine stain birthmark on my face which I have covered for years using different brands of camouflage make up. I am sorry to say that most brands say that they are waterproof/smudgeproof/or will stay off clothes but most of the time unfortunately it will rub off a little. That said there are specialist creams for the body which I havent tried.

Try googling coverderm, dermablend, dermacolor or try your local red cross (you might need a referral for your daughter from her GP) Some therapists dont offer cosmetic camouflage but try ones local to you (The best thing about the GP referral to the red cross is that it is on the NHS and they may have a wider selection of creams to try.

Tell your daughter not to worry(easier said than done, I know - I still have bad days). Take it from me I have what is classed as a severe facial disfigurement and Im doing ok, lovely hubby, gorgeous kids and working in the beauty industry. In fact thats what got me interested seeing a beauty therapist at 13 for cosmetic camouflage.

love

Arrr she is gorgeous. I agree with the laser, some things are best left alone. I hope she comes round to realising that people are so hung up on their own problems to notice what she think is hers.

Hi I use to work with a really good product called Dermablend. Id say just google it. It comes in lots of different shades and it set with a white powder almost like a talc but it then water proof too Ive seen it cover tatooes, Red birth markes and more.

Best of luck
