Hey guys,

So ever since I started my hairdressing apprenticeship which was in June 2012 my fingers and hands started getting numb while I was blow waving and etc.
It got really bad that I had to quit my apprenticeship, I visited a specialist and was told its early carpal tunnel syndrome, after I quit my hands and fingers weren't getting numb as much, so I pretty much gave up on my passion from it and then decided I should do beauty therapy first to expand my business and then finish off my hairdressing course (fast tracked). I stupidly thought that beauty therapy doesn't involve hands and finger (lol).
So basically it's getting really bad, anything I do with my hands and fingers it comes back again and my hands go dead for hours and get annoying shooting pains in my wrists.
I do extensions too now and the micro ring method is a killer to do and also writing or typing is a struggle too.
My specialist told me that I need a surgery, I really want to get it done because I've finished my beauty course and I'm starting my hairdressing course on Jan 31st.
The questions is has anyone had it done??
Is it worth it? Did it help?
What was recovering like?

I'm really gutted that I have to have a surgery so young I'm only 19 turning 20 in April and really don't want scars on my wrists (stupid I know).

Sorry for my shallow posts I'm just really scared I won't be able to do what I love!!
Thanks everyone :)))

Hi Elaine,

I had it done about 23 years ago. It was done under local and the surgeon asked me if I wanted to watch -- errrr, no thanks!! The scar is just above the wrist on the palm of the hand and I really struggle to find it, its only by pulling the skin on the palm really tightly that I can actually locate it. At the time one of my sons was only 6 months old so it was a bit of a pain trying to use my hand (it was my right hand and I'm right handed). However, recovery is really quick, felt I could use my hand much better within only a few days. I can't remember how long it was before the stitches were removed (it was a long time ago), but it was not a major problem. The operation sorted everything out and I haven't had a problem since.

I had de Quervain disease in my left hand about 6 yrs ago. I could barely move my wrist & thumb & was in excruciating pain with it. My last resort was a op but luckily my consultant gave me a cortisone injection first which worked for me. My consultant said it was most probably caused by my hairdressing and as I do a lot of Afro work , plaiting & extensions this was most probably the cause.

Thanks for the reply!
I've thought about it and I think I should go for it as soon as I can, it's great to hear you were using your hand straight away my doctor told me I cannot use it for 3 weeks post op, for me it's my left hand that's really bad because I'm left handed.
I'm also glad that the scaring will be on my palm and not my wrist. :)
Thank u both :)
