Hi I'm a nurse but starting ITEC Diploma in beauty level 2 & 3 afterwards what does everyone recommend. I want my own business but just want people's opinions. Should I get some salon experience first or just go for it and work either from home or mobile to build up a client base then when I feel like I'm getting enough custom rent a shop. Advice from any salon geeks appreciated, really excited about doing beauty as I've always wanted to do it but found myself on the wrong courses and listening to other people about what I should do so this time I'm following my heart! Sorry for the long post X

Hi, well done for following your heart I am doing the same, currently halfway through a level 3 massage course after a 30 year career in the civil service and loving every minute. I suggest you go for it if you want your own business you should be able to start building up a client base whilst training as you will need to practise as you learn. If you can go mobile or work from home that will you save you rental costs as you build up your client base. Good Luck!

You will, I've just started my case studies and had some lovely feedback it's just so rewarding and your nursing background will be a huge bonus. Think I might add facials too, going to see how the massage goes first.

You both sound passionate and that takes you a long way. Enjoy and good luck with your courses!

Not long to wait then! Not sure how much make up is covered on the beauty therapy courses but I know there are separate pure make up courses if you want to specialise. I know they're not cheap the one at my college uses MAC make up but I think it covers tv make up etc, sound interesting x

I'm not going to tell you what to do. But I do know this.

A) If you go into a salon, you gain more exposure to clients (Who may follow you esle where) and it's a great learning experience. But there is the risk of not having much control on what you do or specialise in.

B) With your mobile business you have a lot of control on what you do and who you see. The hard part of this is Marketting. If you're good at it. Awesome. If not you may have a hard time.

C) You could always work part time in a salon. Best of both worlds. However, you have the risk of being limited with certain clients. Say you're in a salon on Wednesday-Saturday and your mobile Sunday to Tuesday then you may bump into issues if your mobile clients have an event on the Friday or vice verser.

Yeh the course covers bridal makeup I think but I will do an extra course in make up once I've done the course. I'm going to post on here and ask makeup artists which ones are the best to do. I know HD does them but will pick a few brains here! What a good place to find out lots of info! Xx

Melbourne. I know there is a shortage of hairdressers. It seems everyone is a hairdresser but no one wants to work/is good enough to work. I'd imagine it's similar for beauty. I believe there is a sponsorship list that tells you what jobs are in demand.

edit; I cant see beauty on this list but they do have beauty manager.
