Hey guys- I work in a beauty salon, Self employed. However there is one price list for everyone..is it wrong of me wanting to charge more for my treatments when I specialise in Lashes and done advance course too to get where I am-but other workers only done a day course of poor training-I just feel for my training and skills I should charge more for the treatment than the other beauticians..is it me just being greedy!?

If you’re self employed, it’s entirely up to you what price you charge for your services. You don’t have to justify your decision to anyone and the salon owner cannot interfere and dictate your prices.

Read the following thread/post and print out a copy of the guidelines as evidence of the legal situation.

In particular, see Section 1 subsection 5.

Thank you for that!! So much information I didn't know! :)

But she think it's a bad idea as she has the price list in the name of the salon which we should all stick to and it be less confusing for clients..ie when I have an offer on-she thinks the clients will expect the other self employed beauticians do a treatment at that offer price. Plus she wants to start paying us monthly and taking off our chair rent at the end of gbe month of our wages coz she thinks as all the money that clients pay go into 1 till of through the card machine for the salon she thinks it be beter but I thought if your self-employed money goes straight to you then you pay the owner the rent? But what do you do if the money and card payments go through 1 till, is the owner meant to give you the earnings at the end of the day??

You should be taking your own payments if you're self employed.

Being self employed should come with the freedom to choose your own prices and own hours.

To me it sounds like the salon owner doesn't want the burden of paying full time wages, but wants you to act like an employee. He/she cannot have it both ways.

Ring ACAS for advice. The number’s at the bottom of the check list.

Could you arrange to meet the other renters after work one evening, show them the HMRC info. and agree to talk to the salon owner together and insist that she follows the guidelines.

Trying to make it appear to clients that you’re all employed by the salon is a very bad idea. If she was investigated by HMRC, they could decide that she’s set up a sham employment situation and she’d be prosecuted, fined and required to repay an amount that they determined was lost wages to her self employed staff. She’s being very naive if she thinks they don’t investigate small businesses. Lots of hairdressing and beauty salons were investigated and prosecuted last year.

Also, if all the monies go through her till, she risks hitting the VAT threshold and having the salon pay vat on everything. That would also negatively impact the self employed renters.

Fact is, you’re all independent business owners. You should be running your own promotions and price lists and clients should be made aware that you’re separate to the salon.

Thank you for both for all this information! I am very new to all this so this has been a very interesting read- will get all the other self employed together and have a discussion and go from there. Thanks again!
